Hi everyone.
Back from Tassie now.
High praise for DDP: took my 5D in on the way home, couldn't replicate the issues (something weird with battery/lens connectivity) but explained them thoroughly and they gave me a new one on the spot.
Of course I didn't realise it was old stock at the time ... hadn't heard the 5D II announcement ;)
Anyway, more Tassie photos soonish.
That's pretty darn good service. Welcome back ;)

This just passed my way and I laughed at it.
Paddy was working at the fish plant in Cork when he accidentally cut off all 10 of his fingers. He went to the emergency room in Cork's hospital.
The doctor looked at Paddy and said, 'Let's be avin' da fingers and I'll see what oi can do'.
Paddy said, 'Oi haven't got da fingers.'
'Whadda ya mean you haven't got da fingers? Lord Tunderin' Jesus, it's 2008! We's got microsurgery and all kinds of incredible techniques. I could have put dem back on and made you like new! Why didn't ya bring da fingers?!?'
And Paddy said, ' How da fock was I 'spose to pick dem up?'

I ended up going with Virgin... similar plans to Optus but I chose them for their much smaller cancellation fee as I'm intending on leaving the country not all that long before the contract expires.
The phone's pretty damn good for what I wanted it for so far - just gotta wait for my number to port across so I can have a proper go at the web browsing.

Makes sense to... that's how Sony's going to be pushing its A900 24mp FF cam - "Look, it's got more MP than Canon's $10k 1ds, it's an incredible bargain for not all that much more than you were wanting to spend already and you get pro this, that, the other"... etc.
Like with that advanced creative basic whatever mode where you select a slider for DOF and exposure... not something pros are going to use but if you were new to it and unfamiliar with how cameras worked it could be a friendly way to ease into it.

precisely - there's a ripe market of people who are interested in gadgets flush with money who don't mind spending up on electronics gear - look at home theatre systems for $5k+, ultra-fast desktops and laptops, 50"+ plasma/LCD TVs... spending a large amount on gadgets and electronics is getting very much the everyday.
I reckon Sony'll sell quite a few of those cameras to that area of the market... mind you, the 5D II ought to do quite well too given the similar specs.

Dan...that's a fantastic shot...framed beautifully and sharp as with such a great capture too. Keeper!
Davo...did you do something to the childs eyes in PP? Although they are fastinating they look almost doll like..actually in the first shot he looks like a doll full stop. Was this due to PP or was it as you saw? Seriously cute kid! And beautiful captures! I seriously need a 50 1.4.
On a side note...you have guts.I imagine it would be way more awkward for a bloke to ask a stranger if they can take photos of their child than a woman...so many sick minds out there causing over protective parents.
I do a few casual shifts at Coles each week to help pay for my 'habit' and this lady came through the other day with a little girl aged about two...and she had eyes very similar to that. Such a light aqua blue and yet almost irridescant (sp?), I had never seen eyes of such an unusual colour before.
I turned to the mother to ask where her daughter got such amazing eyes...only to see mum had same eyes. Very unusal.
I see sooo many adorable kids in that job....smiley ones with big eyes and curly hair and I have to bite my tongue so I don't blurt out "I would love to take photos of your child sometime'.

I didn't even know Auto ISO existed...always wish my 30D had it tho....
so I thought the way it would work is you stick it in manual and say I want this shutter and this apeture, and it goes well you need this ISO and away you go...
but from the 5DmkII - "Auto ISO (100 - 3200) in all modes except manual "
What good is it to you in say, AV, where you say I want 2.8....at what point does it change the ISO?

It tries to maintain the 1/focal length guide. So with a 50mm lens, it'll try to keep 1/50th as the speed while changing the iso to maintain exposure.

For the Brisbane Strobist meets, we usually get everyone attending to sign a waiver saying they are responsible for their own well being. Anyone that hasn't signed the waiver, doesn't get in.

So you are saying if I was at 200mm, it would kick in at 1/200?
Where I would use it, is doing dance performance photography, and I know that I will need 2.8 and say 1/500 to make sure I don't get blur....then allow it to vary ISO...it won't do that?
So it would be useless to me? Not that I am in the market for a new camera anyways.

I find auto-ISO in its current implementation most useful to me by actually using Tv... which is something I never do otherwise (I'm an M or Av person). Considering I shoot wide open 90% of the time I set the shutter speed to the minimum I want to shoot at (usually a safe amount above handholding limits) - or limit the shutter speeds available to the camera using CFns - set ISO 100 and enable auto-ISO. Since I'm shooting in dark environments the camera picks the widest aperture, sees that the ISO is way low and picks the appropriate ISO to get a good exposure.
Doesn't work all that wonderfully in practice, tbh.
If I were to want to use something other than wide open you can select the apertures available to the camera with the CFns (i.e. make it f/8 to f/11 only) for landscape stuff... not that you'd ever want to use auto-ISO for landscape stuff, mind.
What would be most useful would be an Iv mode or such where you set stuff just like manual mode and let ISO be chosen. It'd be a lot quicker than working around it like this :p
Edit: Quick question on any Sydneysiders while i'm thinking about it...
I want to head to the SydneyFC match this weekend...How's the SFS's camera policy? I was planning on taking my 70-200. Will they stop me at the gate?
Got a low-key bag to sling it in? :p I know Josh got barred from a local Newcastle football match with his 300 2.8 IS... that is rather a lot bigger than the 70-200, mind.

I was thinking about throwing it in my technics shoulder bag. Maybe throw a jumper or something over it all...My mate said he was there once in A-reserve (about 4 rows in) and was asked to put his zoom away...Problem I feel is as soon as they see a white lens they'll be on my arse.

I wouldn't be surprised... I generally wouldn't take it - the hassle of getting barred and having to take the lens home/risk leaving it in the car is a bit much.

Only have a kit zoom otherwise...The reason I want to go is to get shots too...It sucks, cause it's all for personal use.

Most venues are pretty narky and have little idea as to what constitutes a camera that will get good photos... I've seen people hauled out of the pit thanks to a 300D+kit lens but the person standing next to them with the latest LX3/G10 etc. get ignored... which are likely going to have equitable if not superior IQ at the end of the day.
For those drooling over the 5D II's specs here's a link from elsewhere in the forums showing the high ISO shots:

Funnily enough, that was the first thought that ran through my head. Although I then thought longer, and thought no ruler as it could be deemed as a weapon...Gonna take some tape just in case.

I went for a walk today in an effort to stay awake... two shots:

note: 135mm+birds=fail :p Nowhere near long enough for birds... it's not much of a shot technically but I thought the caption was amusing. Or maybe it's the 48 hours with no sleep. :p I did find it interesting that 1/800s is not enough to freeze a pigeon's wing tips...
f/4 and 17mm sure doesn't get you much bokeh...

That's strange. Pretty sure I can freeze low speed aircraft propellers at 1/800 and I wouldn't think a pidgeon moved it's wings faster than that

haha yeah, we were wondering why it was coming up so white... guess (thanks Justin :p) it's cos red is closer to the IR spectrum :p

^^ That was a guess rememeber ;) One thing you know for sure is that the red paint is reflecting alot of the IR spectrum.
On that note, does anyone know the actual spectrum that the IR filters let through?

720Nm, if I recall correctly,,,

Depends on the filter. That one is 890nm and longer wavelength, of course the sensor can't actually pick up anything past about 2000nm.
The standard Hoya R72 is 720nm and greater which still lets through a bit of visible red.

nods, ISO 6400 is definitely cleaner than my 1d3. Heck, sRAW has a function now - for when you don't need the super high resolution and want less noise... bin half the pixels and the noise is going to improve markedly.
heck, run some noise reduction software, down-res the linked photos then add a bit of sharpening and the photos are stupidly clean.

I'm selling my 60/2.8.
Sad to part with it, but I'm edging closer to 100% full-frame these days :(
I think it's the best crop sensor macro lens there is. Short enough to be great hand held and give not-too-shallow DOF, long enough to get close to stuff.
