Have you looked locally for bags? Last time I went looking for a gear bag I found a bunch in camping/bag/army disposal stores that would take a -lot- of gear for $50 or so.. waterproof, too.

Angus said he's making an order from B&H in the next week or two - he needs to order one of those huge body bags (his freight is over $100 from Adorama, that gives you an idea of the size of his order!) It's more economical for me to order a small item from him than for me to place the order, so I'll let him organise it.

I got the soundtrack of the RENT movie before I saw the movie. A friend sent me Seasons of Love, then I decided to get the soundtrack. Heya Angus

Haven't used it presonally, but I hear it's really slow, and you run out of batteries on the ipod when dumping cards. Not sure how true, but in the end, a P3000 isn't that expensive these days.

+1 for the 001Bs, I quite like that stand.. and I much prefer the LumoPro LP632 over the standard umbrella swivel - the notches make it nicer to use, imho, and the whole thing is much more compact and solid with no loss of functionality.

Ah thanks for the info. I was looking at the LP632 as well. So, I'd be getting the 001B, LP632 swivel and a Westcott 43" double-collapsible white umbrella. Am I drastically missing anything? And is there anything else that I should look at getting?

I think that's a great setup to start with. Most of what I use is two 001Bs with the LP632s and various lighting modifiers from there.

Have you seen all the Honl stuff? You can make the same thing yourself with a little time and effort but the Honl stuff generally looks more pro if that thing bothers you..

Thanks for the idea :)

If you look out the back of Maryville by the river they've done up the boardwalk and it's really quite nice... there's some playgrounds and a generally alright aesthetic-wise riverside. Closer to the industrial part there's a boardwalk through some mangrovey things and on the other side there's some nice small hills and a boat-y thing...

I ride around that spot a bit :p

Not so much no life, just a quiet one in after the end of another busy week. Beer and wine consumed, had a bite to eat, half watching footy, half processing pics, and will be happy to have a sleep in tomorrow morning.

Cold-ish in Bris-Vegas, too, although not quite beer-chilling cold.

Transmitter and 2 receivers came to about $45 with free shipping and they arrived in less than 7 days from HK.

hey guys, if i were to print a large panorama, say 2210 x 440, what would be my minimum dpi, bearing in mind it is to go on wall in a house, but it would need to be viewed from at least 2m back to see the whole thing properly.

normal photos are printed at around 300dpi right?

That's not entirely true.

You should check what the printer place you're printing it wants. 72dpi isn't really a suitable resolution for a large print. 2.2m is pretty wide.

More printery places would use 300dpi (or is it 240dpi on macs?) but dpi is only really used/useful in printing. 72dpi used to be what people thought you could save to for screen res for no difference to be seen. I think there's several articles on the net that sorta mention this. In the end, I see dpi only useful for print where the number is obviously the number of dots per inch on paper.

If you have a photo in photoshop which is 2210 x 440 at 300dpi, and the printery prints it at 300dpi, then it'll print onto paper at 2210x440... if that makes sense?

<start 0.02> OK - maybe should rephrase the comment - I understand that default setting on PSP/CS etc, ie much of the image editing progs, is 72, but 300dpi is the preferred printer density of dpi, esp if printing larger images or if a higher quality is required for publishing.

If your 2210x440 is at 72, there'll be some major shrinkage of image dimension when you convert to 300 dpi.

So it kinda depends. </end 0.02>

JustinLawrence

Yep i get all this. the thing is if i print at 300dpi, then my image will only be 1100mm x 218mm (image is 13057 x 2579 pixels)

I would like to potentially print it twice that size, so that will only give me 150dpi.

SO my real question is what is an acceptable resolution for an image this size, 150 dpi might be a bit course...

It's kinda a tough one that one... my image apps default to 240dpi?! which is weird... but in the end, again... dpi is only relevent when it comes to printing.

And if you change from 72dpi, you'll get image dimension growth? or are you talking about dimension in a different way?

I always was under the impression that when it came to on screen work (not scan/print) then dpi was kinda irrelevant.

again, someone correct me if I'm wrong :o

In my opinion, you should set your DPI to what the printer wants... then change your image dimension.

Not sure but i was always told to change the DPI without resampling... again, maybe I'm wrong and have been doing it wrong all this time

No - I believe you are correct - on screen work is not an issue whether at 72, 300 or whatever takes your fancy. But when adjusting the dpi, (upwards) the image size reduces. Went thru this issue when I took some head shots for work, and printing coy wanted 300 dpi, which reduces the image L x H. Although in this case it didn't matter as the end result was a smallish (3cm x 2cm) printed shot.

Ditto - although mine was from 400D, but printed a jpeg (before I went RAW) to A2 glossy and result was fine. But then the prof printing coys are fussy buggers who need that little extra.... hence 300 dpi.

But if all you want is a reasonable looking print up to A2, default setting should be dandy.

unless you tell it not to resample (which works too).

If you print a 72dpi image at 300dpi, then yes... it goes bananas... and the sizes all go skewif... but who does that anyway?

I thought it was mainly because on paper, 300 dots per lineal inch is about the minimum without getting gradient issues. It's not because the printer coys are fussy... it's mainly because it looks craptastic printed at anything less :) hehe...

i might have to print it smaller than desired, either that or put up with a slightly soft print.

btw if i have an image which is 300dpi and say 1000mmx400mm, and i give it to printing company and say i want it 2000mm wide, they will still print it at whatever their printer is set to (ie 300dpi) its just that the original image only has around 150dpi of original pixes at that size, the balance will be interpolated by whatever software they use, hence a soft/fuzzy image can occur.

Very good and very fast, Usually overnight to me. Just make sure you leave atleast 2mm bleed room around the borders. I got caught out with a few soccer team photos i did. I put a logo top left but because their pro printer oversizes unlike my crappy HP printer it cut a bit off the logo so i had to reprint 20 odd shots. Probably won't affect you unless you do happen to have something close to the edge you need in the shot. My own silly fault for not reading the fine details and trying to get the logo as far in the corner as possible

Good question. LR can do it with text from your Identity Plate... I don't think it will use an image though. You can set up a PS action to do it, and run it as a thingy on export through LR...

Yeah thats the way that I do it

Do all your edits in PS, then run an action that resizes and sharpens for web and adds a border and puts a watermark over it
