How do you guys do your watermarking on your pics? does Lightroom automate it, if I want to use an image for watermark instead of text?
Good question. LR can do it with text from your Identity Plate... I don't think it will use an image though. You can set up a PS action to do it, and run it as a thingy on export through LR...
I've got a add on to LR which can add borders and image based watermarks. Have to dig out the instructions for installing it though :|

Okay, some advice please. Trying my hand at "painting" (is that what it's called) on the car in the back yard. The errors in the first attempt are obvious, but the image was more focused than the second one.
1: Exposure 128 seconds, f/8, 100 ISO at 30mm
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3250/2660072429_e91bc06929.jpg
As you can see, the flash gun is in the picture.
2: Exposure 107 seconds, f/5.6 100 ISO at 33mm
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3204/2660901714_5d4aa8431c.jpg
No flash gun in the picture, but the image is less focused.
In both pictures the focus mode was AI Servo because for some reason, setting the camera to one shot or AI Focus doesn't seem to work in Bulb mode.
Bearing in mind that through the eyepiece I could only just make out the outline of the car itself, so manually focusing the camera was out of the question so how do I go about getting a sharply focused image when taking night time shots in minimal light. In this case, the only other outside light source was a crescent moon.

Kev,
Coupla points.
Why 100 iso, by raising your iso and reducing your exposure time the overall noise should be reduced.
Have a greater distance between the subject and the background, and light up your subject with a torch/floodlight to gain the focus.
I noticed in your second image the lightning was just done from the front, the tell tale flash reflections in both give you up, and the flash shadows. can you shoot thru a pillowcase to give you a umbrella or softbox effect(if you don't have them)

Actually, in both pics, the ambient light was nothing more than whatever the moon was throwing down plus using my 430EX flash around the car, only in the second photo I was standing back further.
I did use a Sto-Fen Omni Bounce in the first photo (just forgot) and I didn't give the shadows on the fence much thought until I downloaded the pics. First attempt at anything fancy so I wasn't really expecting much.
I think the focusing let me down more than anything.

Light painting :) hehe.

With those photos, I was shooting at ISO500 or 640 to minimise exposure time.
I used a LED workshop lamp in a softbox, you need to make sure you can't see the flash fire in the frame. Wear black, and block the flash with your body.

just a point here... if you're using the default setting for focusing i.e. half press shutter button etc, then if the AF can't get a lock, then the One Shot/AI Focus won't work. For night shots, I tend to use MF anyway... but if you must use AF, then if you seperate out the AF buttons (and use something like * for AF) then you can focus, let it sit and press the shutter button at will :)

just had my Mom down for her 76th birthday, she is not in the best of health. We had about 13 for lunch and after I took her for a run around the nearby Sea Cliff Bridge in her wheelchair. Now from my end it is mostly uphill and i was suprised that mum and I had to keep waiting for my sister's partners kids to catch up with us,,and they are teenagers. So here I am pushing mum, who is larger than before due to ill health etc, and I waiting cause these teenagers cant walk uphill.
Maybe it was the big lunch followed by the chocolate mud cake, chocolate and berry brownies and chock cookies plus ice cream in their guts.

Islington Park, down Maitland Rd. and then down Selwyn Street until that little hill there where they stood around doing.. not much, really, before wandering back. 41 people were arrested for jumping the fence onto the tracks and doing various protest-y things.
The police force was scarily impressive though - large Alsatian turnout who were pretty aggressive what with all the noise, a dozen or more mounted police who got into the crowds at a couple of points and herded people about using the horses' chests...
Oh, and they had a "special powers" zone all over the suburb, too, so you could get searched without a warrant and arrested for disobeying police officers commands. Saw one photog right behind us get taken down by a police officer for stopping on the bridge to take a photo after we'd been instructed not to stop. He was pretty livid at the manhandling and I think they tried to take his CF card away from him, which he started shouting a lot about. In the end he got away without being arrested but there was a lot of talking and taking details.
The photog called out to us to take some photos of him being manhandled by the police but we were on a narrow footpath on the bridge surrounded by other police officers so that didn't seem like a prudent thing to do if we didn't want to end up that way ourselves :/

Interesting.
I'm curious about the whole special powers thing. Who declares a special powers area, why, and how does it impact on photographic rights honoured elsewhere?
I was chatting to some of the police about it and there's apparently a massive amount of paperwork involved going through all sorts of committees and run up to what sounded like the highest powers to get permission to create such a zone for 24-48 hours or whatever.
From the rundown I got the general gist of it was that we do what they tell us to if we don't want to get arrested and any rights you have outside of this zone shouldn't be expected within it.
I must say that overall the police were generally more than reasonable with the force exerted and that the protesters were generally well-behaved and apart from a few incidents with people grabbing the horses there weren't any overt actions against officers or protesters. There weren't any special exemptions made for media in the zone and they were very fast jumping on (heh, nearly literally) anyone who took photos where they didn't want them to.
How all that stands up in court I have no idea but several officers said that you could get arrested on the spot for disobeying what they told you to do. Which was generally "don't stop, no photos on the bridge/that close to the fence/standing on that/etc".

I too was at the protest with Jim today. The crowd was gathered at a park, giving speeches about the point they were trying to get across, and about 5 minutes before they were about to begin their march, a police officer spoke to an organiser with regards to the 'special powers' the police would now posses.
It wasn't till later in the day that Jim and myself found a pair of somewhat friendly officer's who informed us that the laws were not just made up on the spot, and that they have had to go through the 'hierarchy of law making' but were only valid for the event.
Apparently the designated areas consisted of pretty much the suburb of Islington, through to the Carrington Coal Terminal.
For some quite useful information, visit their official website at http://www.climatecamp.org.au (http://www.climatecamp.org.au/)
I guess I ought to show you at least a snippet of the event too.
Seen here are officers arresting a protester atop a coal carriage, probably 3m off the ground, so it actually was quite dangerous. Yes, that is a person beneath those 2 boys in blue.

I don't support greenies who do illegal stuff, but we need people on the fringes who are willing to do crazy stuff to get the attention of those less crazy. They usually have a good point to make, even if their demands aren't always realistic ;)
And for the record, I'm not a crazy greenie but I do pay extra for green electricity and wish public transport was good enough to drive less. I'll like it even more when our cars are renewably powered.

Jim mentioned this exact same point to me. If no police turned up, and no media turned up, the event would be an epic failure, and would surely discourage it from happening again.
But, everyone has a right to protest, and that is what they did, but wasting police resources does not seem justified.
Local news reports said 37 arrests were made, and 3 coal trains were disrupted, preventing over 20,000 tonnes of coal entering the port.
My bet is they just pushed this coal out a different port anyway!

Yep ;) Worked my whole live in an industry which relies on the coal industry and i need to keep working. People don't realise how many people would be affected if there was no more coal mining i don't think. I also don't agree with global warming but we do need to find alternatives to coal and oil only because they will run out.
So you're happy for the industry to be shaken up by coal running out, but not for the sake of the environment?
:p
For me, the jury's still out on global warming. Too many smart people can't agree on it.
The fact remains that burning coal and oil are "dirty" processes that do *something* to the environment (exactly what remains to be seen) and we should find clean ones. Before you even get to the whole problem of them running out.
Meanwhile, of course there is the problem of the sheer size of the industries behind these fuels, as you've pointed out. Shutting them down overnight is not a solution, but neither is complete inaction.

Why would you want the rego of a police car?
Myself and a few others keep a list of police vehicles full details and regos etc. It currently has 4121 entries tracking many cars since 2004 and some since 1998 (Only 2 Area Commands in such detail)

One of the economic problems with coal fired generators is the life span. Treated nicely and they should last 30yrs. You not going to find that many at the later stage of their life cycle either. That's a lot of dollars to throw away before the end of it's life.
It's still a bang for buck thing.

How could someone have accessed these images, Jim?
You posted them anywhere apart from here?
Jim G
13th of July 2008 (Sun), 07:54
The story:
Well, I wasn't going to be submitting the images anywhere so I gave a bunch to the media van which was on-site - they took details and said that they'd send them to the newspapers and whatnot and contact us if any ended up getting used. I wasn't particularly interested in chasing up publications to see if they wanted to use any as I'm behind on a lot of other photo work and the sheer number of photogs there on the day from the Herald etc. meant that most of the local ones would have had it covered already - as such I'd prefer the images to be used somewhere rather than languishing on my hard drive forever so I was happy to provide them and see where they went.
Not something I usually do as I'm normally quite pedantic about giving things away for free but hey, I figured it'd be interesting to see what happens. Apparently what happens is that they end up on stock photography websites! Heh. Can't say I'm overly peeved - I wouldn't have given them away if I strongly cared where they ended up as, hell, I only had the word of the person taking them as to what they were going to do with them :p
This is exactly why I'm pedantic about images I care about.

The media thrive on the "free" press. They baffle the public who happen to have the images they want with.. " we only pay our staff photographers"...and when really pushed..." we do pay some of the free lance stringers who supply us all the time.."
Basically you have to sleep with your radio scanner 24/7 to try and eek a living as stringer. or you go the slimly road of paparatzing, BTW I heard Jamie Fauwcett, the guy who was papping Nicole Kidman, has filed for bankruptcy!

You could try looking in the preferences of your mail program or the Flickr uploader to see if they have a checkbox that will change things.
I know that Outlook has an area where you can tell it what programs to use to open links.
You could also tick the box in the Firefox options to make it check if it is the default browser when you open it and change it that way.
