After thinking about the problem Angus had last night with is LaCie external drive - I went out and bought 2Tb of external disk today. Currently copying all data over...

Yeah.. it's spurred me on to attempt to complete my half-finished job of keywording or deleting all of my photos. Having a backup is much more sensible if it's all organised and is only of the photos you actually need to keep... I reckon a couple more solid sets of days off and I'll have it done. Imatch FTW :D

Hi - i'm new to this thread but have been around the forum a little while. I've done a few searches and there seems to be a distinct lack of Darling Downs photographers on PTON, that, or they are all closet photogs or maybe uninterested in the content available here. Good day! New to this thread. A semi-serious question here. I'm staying in Melbourne, specifically around the Doncaster area. In recent days I decided to buy myself an old film P&S to experiment with B&W film.

The biggest mistake I made with this was to assume that I could get virtually any kind of film (for cheap) at Ebay. How wrong that was. I need ASA 400 film that can be easily developed at any shop. There's others that can only be developed using a special method and I don't know how practical they are.

Most of the Ebayers will not ship overseas. So I need to seek some help and advice from the folks here who still use film.

Where can I easily get B&W film at a reasonable price? I tried a few online websites and their prices look exhorbitant, in the order of AUD8 for a roll of film, although to be fair, it's good film, Ilford or Tri-X stuff. Are these typically the prices I need to contend with or can I actually get film at a cheaper price?

I don't exactly want to spend 100's of dollars on film alone.

Hope some kind folk here will be able to help, otherwise my B&W project will be dead even before I can get started.

I used to buy 150m rolls of Ilford and load the cannisters myself. Worked out much cheaper. Also developed them myself but it is pretty expensive and time intensive. I found it a lot more rewarding than digital though.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm still probing around for more suggestions on this film business and where to buy from.

That said, if they are indeed going to cost $7 a roll then I'd need to buy the ultra cheap ASA 100 China film and make do with that. It's a bit of a pain though, because I plan to shoot handheld all the time and will also use an orange filter that will eat light, in return for more dramatic images if the conditions are right.

It's awful that film cost is set to blow out of proportion, but I like the idea of always having an expendable camera in my pocket...well, cheap in that sense. I also want to get my hands into real B&W stuff instead of using a digital P&S to shoot color and then convert.

Actually, there's some film available for cheap but it's been expired for some 3 years...anyone knows if this adversely affects my results?

Expired colour film shows a green caste... not sure what expired b+w film does... probably loses contrast

If you take a digital photo in Raw of the developed expired film image can you adjust the colour/contrast imbalance? It might be a way of working hard but with cheap raw materials?

That probably explains the color cast I was getting on my expired ISO 800 film. Not sure if it was actually green, but I thought the colors looked a little washed out. I was reading somewhere about B&W film losing film speed when expired as well. Reason why I'm interested to know is because I can get lots of Ilford XP2 ASA 400 film off the Bay that has been expired for 3 years or so. I don't know if he will ship to Australia but I'm trying to find out. But man, AUD7 for a fresh roll just stinks.

Photographing a B&W print itself is an idea. Back in the days when I was in Singapore (where I was born and spent most of my life) I could ask them to process and scan low-res versions into a CD instead of printing. That saved me a bundle everytime, and if I saw a shot I really liked I just needed to mail the negative to someone to get a high-res scan.

Nothing like that here I think, not unless I am prepared to shell out exorbitant amounts of money.

Come to think about it, my Dad might have done it in a storeroom in the past, but I was very, very young then. And my Dad went off photography for a while, only to start doing it again last year, in the form of digital. Digital is much more convenient and probably cheaper in the long run. I probably should have bought a digital P&S to carry around instead, but I can't stand how the images sometimes look with these small-sensor cameras.

Then again, other bits of the image will matter more than just its quality. Still, there's the allure of actually doing B&W photography, something which I know I'm bad at, but want to get better.

One of these days, I'll run a few rolls through the old AE-1 and drag out the gear and show the kids how to black out the windows, make up the chemicals, use the enlarger etc. They'll probably wonder why you'd bother, but at least they'll know how it used to be ;)

i was being considerate of my wife who uses the camera too.
combination for time being will be
16-35 II, 50mm
next order 70 - 200 IS f2.8L

then i will get the 24-70 f2.8, by then hopefully there will be an IS version as rumoured on canonrumors.com.

Good choice of lenses ;)

Come to think about it, my Dad might have done it in a storeroom in the past, but I was very, very young then. And my Dad went off photography for a while, only to start doing it again last year, in the form of digital. Digital is much more convenient and probably cheaper in the long run. I probably should have bought a digital P&S to carry around instead, but I can't stand how the images sometimes look with these small-sensor cameras.

Then again, other bits of the image will matter more than just its quality. Still, there's the allure of actually doing B&W photography, something which I know I'm bad at, but want to get better.

I know that the quality will be much worse than using digital of course. I also know it will be expensive, messy and time consuming, but it woud be awesome fun! I'm one of those people that will buy all the gear, spend alot of time perfecting the process, then once i have it all perfected i will loose interest, lol.

Angus is a loser! He went to Mamma Mia and liked it!!! NO NO NO!
The movie is what it is.

If you don't like ABBA and/or don't like an ensemble of their hits being strung together into a story, you won't like it.

I happen to be an ABBA fan (not that I listen to their music more than a few times per year :p) and respect whoever scripted their songs into a cohesive musical, and think the movie does the musical justice very well. I just found Pierce Brosnan hard to stomach as a singer ...

Why so keen to bag something you were never going to like anyway?

*sigh*

As i said before, I didnt know it was going to be ABBA, I dont mind ABBA too much but could not listen to them more then a few times a year. A group of songs that where never intended to go into a story should not be put into one hence i said it was a crap idea.

That's the whole idea of musicals. And they are premium entertainment, at least $100 per ticket.

Live performance musicals ftw!

One of these days, I'll run a few rolls through the old AE-1 and drag out the gear and show the kids how to black out the windows, make up the chemicals, use the enlarger etc. They'll probably wonder why you'd bother, but at least they'll know how it used to be ;)

It's a disappearing art form, and I think they'd be happy to see it before it vanishes completely!

hehe yeah, it's my 'signature' lightpainted effect. Bulb mode, I shot ISO640 today cos it was raining and I rushed it :p so I bumped up the ISO to get more effective light. Laziness and the 5D doesn't mind ISO640, I could be shooting like this daily...

to be honest i've never shot in bulb before..

Bulb's nothing exciting :p I have an RS-80N3 so that helps a lot.

I don't use a lightmeter - my theory is that you don't really need a lightmeter; with enough experience (or trial and error :D) you'll get it right, if not pretty close the first few times. Otherwise, I use the P mode on the camera, and see what it thinks is the 'optimal' exposure, and work from there

If you shoot the same sort of things, you'll roughly know where your shutter/aperture/ISO will fall. Then you adjust from there after taking a test shot. With my lightpainting, it's different:
* I shoot bulb because I will need more than 30s.
* The amount of light is controlled by the lightpainting, and every photo will be different (now THAT is what you call art, right? :p)
* ISO affects how sensitive the camera will be towards the light; however this also has an effect on the ambient background light too.

davo_robbo
19th of July 2008 (Sat), 08:19
