My 15 year old NEC projection TV was fading. I hate to replace it beacause it has a beautiful Oak cabinet. I pulled off the back to see if there was any tinkering I could do. I noticed that the lenses for the three guns were filthy. I pulled out my ROR and PEC Pads and cleaned them up. The TV picture hasn't looked this good in years.
Regards,
Scott

Last night I was cleaning CDs with my Canon lens-cleaning fluid and tissues. Good skills like this are handy.

Sorry to disappoint you Scott (not Scottes :D ) but that's a normal thing to do for this type of TV.

That's a very odd and not very pleasant comment. In fact, it's rather condescending.
Why would I be disappointed? If I wasn't a photographer(or TV repairman), I would't even have thought to do that in the first place. I didn't claim to discover anything new, just something I never knew.

I used to have a 55" Mitsubishi rear projection set, and it would break down often enough that the repairs people kept the optics reasonably clean. About 4 years ago, we replace it with a 60" Mitsu, and we've never had it worked on or cleaned. It's like the Energizer bunny.

This raises a good question as to whether or not the performance is being degraded by dirty optics. We live in a very dusty climate, and it makes me wonder what the inside of that box looks like. Hmmm. Maybe I'll dig into it one of these days just to see.

As to using photographic skills in other areas, I guess I have to ask, "What skills?"

You might want to double check with Mr. Gross, but I bet it's in the manual... :)
