Your fill-in flash has not enough power :) :) :)
Nice shot otherwise :) :)

Ha ha, you mean a real "fill in flash" or the one I used in PSE. Man, I tried that lasso thing to select the bird only, but couldn't do it. One must be a world class surgeon to use that tool.

Thanks for the comment btw.

Shots like this are best done VERY early in the morning when the sun can light up from underneath. Or late in the afternoon.

As to the lasso... That's OK for rough stuff. The Pen tool allows you to make a selection and then move the points around until you have it perfect.

But for this I would have used the Magic Wand and selected the sky, then Selection... Invert followed by a Feather of 2-3 pixels. That would leave the bird selected rather well.

Aha! I knew there must be a way around it, especially that the background is plain (my knowledge in PS is basically zero).

Scottes, I'm learning so much from you...thanks!

Use one of the color channels to separate out the blue sky from the bird and use it as an alpha layer that you can load as a selection. Then feather the selection by 1 or 2 pixels and you're all set. And you save all that money going to medical school to become a surgeon.

Ha ha, I don't think even a surgeon can use that tool.

But hey, thanks for the help.

I would agree. Magic wand and invert, as long as the sky all gets picke dup, otherwise pen tool and paths.

that tail makes a very nice shoot-through diffuser :-P

LOL. :p

Better attempt at the bird pic than myself. Everything I shoot, comes out crap, or don't have enough reach.

That would work with this pic. Take a look at the Post Processing Tutorials List for other options where it wouldn't. Lots of good info there. See:

Thank you guys for the help and comments.

Black-Matter, it is really tough. This is the best out of around 200 pics.

Chris, remind me to send you a Pringles cap, it's a lot easier to use than a bird's tail :D .

Thank you guys again.
