I am planning on getting a drebel, an EF 50mm f1.8, and a bigma or the sigma 170-500mm. I need to chose between the EF 75-300mm IS lens, and the Tokina 24-200mm lens. SInce I am getting a drebel, the rebates will make the lenses about the same price. I will use this lens for general photography and some wildlife. Which would you reccomend?
Thanks.

AlexI'd choose the Canon. You do lose a wide angle capability but you also pick up 100mm + IS with the Canon.
The Canon will also keep its value and the Tokina won't. At some point you might want to upgrade to L lenses or whatever so selling the stuff you have is not out of the question. There have been comments in the past here that it's somehow wrong to prepare for that day, "I don't buy lenses to sell them ..." but any piece of camera gear I own I'd sell if there was an upgrade involved. Brand name lenses just hold there value better. Oh, get a good UV filter for it too.
A 24-200 mm focal length is asking a lot from a lens and I'd want to read reviews of whether it's any good at all, even with the Canon out of the race. But get the Canon, and at some point in the future some type of moderate wide angle.

I'm not a big fan of the 170-500mm Sigma...
If you can swing it.. you'd be a lot better off with one of there EX lenses with an HSM focus motor like the 50-500mm EX HSM.
But you may want to consider forgetting about both the 170-500mm AND the 75-300mm and just go ahead and combine the $$ for the 100-400mm L IS... it will do all of what the other two will do.. and do it better.

IMO I would sugest to NOT get lenses with a HUGE zoom range. just my opinion
I think the delayed gratification of getting more lenses of higher optical quality, over time (for budgetary reasons) will out weigh the +'s of having one lens that covers the entire focal length range.
Popular suggestions here. [Canon 50mm f1.8 ] [Tamron 28.75mm f2.8] [Canon 70-200mm f4] [85mm f1.8] [100mm] [Canon EF 35mm f/2] [Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM] [Canon EF 28-105 F/3.5-4.5 II USM] [Tamron 17-35 f2.8-f] [17-40mm f4L]

HI
I was in the same sort of predicament as your self as what lens to get, (mikesd) suggested the Tokina 24-200mm, so I looked at the reviews on this site http://photographyreview.com/pscLenses/35mm,Zoom/Tokina/PRD_85225_3128crx.aspx
I was very pleased with the reviews so I went and brought one for £199.00 and I’m very happy with it
I’ve only been using for a day to be fare. But the reviews speak for then self’s
