Working in a photo shop

Hi,

I had a thought earlier, and I apologies if this has been discussed before...

Would a way to build my kit up be to work in a photo shop for a while and benefit from staff discount?

Don't know how substantial staff discounts are...but there might be advantages to working in a photo shop.

It depends how much you earn, e.g. if you get paid £6.00/hour and a 15% discount well that is grand to some degree, but if you pay full price but are getting paid £12/hour somewhere else then you are better with the latter I guess. Seems a pretty daft move to me working in a camera shop. Lots of boredom, hassle and poor pay IMO ;-)

Condyk is right in his advice.

That said, I did that many many many years ago while in university. I managed the place and got paid an above average salary PLUS the companies sold direct to us at a good discount off wholesale plus I used to buy salesman samples and discontinued products at times (compounding the discounts by another 50-75%). I also got access to lots of product to try out and used to find really good enlarging lenses to use. The salesmen were very kind to me.

Folks in shops tell me they no longer get such great discounts. So check it out maybe in your area things are different and discounts are worth it.

It is very boring unless you have some studying to do to fill the gaps.
