View Full Version : E-TTL flash won't second sync when Tv>1/10

I have a hacked Drebel with latest (June) hack.
In custom functions I've set the flash to second curtain sync. But when I go into manual mode and select a relatively long shutter speed... approximately slower than 1/10 of a second, the flash fires at the first curtain.
Why is this happening? The flash is E-TTL, right? It fires the pre-flash before the first curtain starts moving...
Does it mean that all E-TTL cameras can't second curtain with slow shutter speeds?
I mean... they'd have to fire the pre-flash at the beginning, in 1/5th of a second your subject would have enough time to close your eyes giving you an interesting picture.
Is this why canon disabled this? Or am I doing something wrong?

Don't quote me on this because I'm not entirely sure if it's correct or not, but that feature, along with some others, still doesn't work w/ the hacked firmware.

But it works with shutter speeds like 1/40 and 1/10

Is it just that at 1/10 or slower there is so much light entering the camera that it doesn't need the flash at all and is utilising available light?
You could try a smaller aperture and or go into a very dark room as a test

The hack 2nd curtain flash sync is shown as not working, perhaps you have found the reason why :)
Have a look at...

It still fires... I should've made that clear.
But it fires with the first curtain.

Oh yeah... I haven't seen that pdf yet.
I get it. The main thing is that it does second curtain at 1/10 and higher. :)
I'm just curious. When using second curtain sync, when does the pre-flash fire with 10D?

I'm just curious. When using second curtain sync, when does the pre-flash fire with 10D?The preflash always fires before the first curtain opens.

Anything other than before the first curtain starts to open would be self-defeating.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but I am just trying to understand.
Is this a Canon firmware versus hacked firmware problem?
--or--
Is this a Digital Rebel versus 10D problem?
--or--
Is this a testability problem?
--or--
Is this a User Error?

A question...how do you know if it's flashing at first or second curtain?

By the blur in the picture.
