Minimal Focal Distance of S1IS at Full Zoom?

There is much talk of focal problems (especially in dim light) with the S1IS. I noticed the other night that it seemed impossible focusing a shot at full zoom (i.e.10X)from a distance of 3-4 feet. This was in the evening in my kitchen with lighting from a 7o watt incandescent bulb (i.e. not a very bright room) I could not focus with the manual focus either. Is there a minimal distance to focus at full zoom - if so does anyone know what it is?

According to Canon's specs, the closest Normal focus is 3.1 ft at Tele, 3.9 in. at wide.
