OK folks...time to get back to photography. July has just been declared RAW free. Unburden yourselves of hours and hours of foolish post processing. Take your best shot at posting images captured in JPEG only. You can PP as you choose, the only requirement is you can not use RAW. EXIF data required to show you are playing by the rules!

Discussions on this can be found here! http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=530499 Please use that link for discussion on the topic and this as a place to share your shots!

Hm, I used to PP for hours no matter JPEG or RAW....but I'm in. Do we get penalty points if we end up shooting JPEG? If I suddenly got a wedding or paid gig I'd prefer to shoot RAW...

You can always shoot RAW + L, and only use your JPEG shots for the purposes of this, erm, purpose.

But if I did that, my 8GB card capacity would go down from 1117 shots to like 480 shots. How can I cope with space for less than 1,000 shots on a card?

Dan, I think you have convinced me to use jpeg more. I have shot raw for a long time. But I just got back from a quick trip to the zoo and got this. Straight from the camera with your settings. I have only resized for web and a litlle sharpening after that (its in the resize action) and add the frame and done. I will probably adjust your settings a little sharpening is maybe a little heavy for my liking. I can also add more sharpening if the general setting is not enough.

Ok I am killing time on this chilly wet morning waiting for the fireworks photos tonight I just threw this together. It is a double exposure done in camera not in software, with 1 live subject and 1 non live subject (a book). The flash was manually fired twice once for each exposure and the 1 live subject was moved into another position for the second exposure. The time between the two exposures was controlled using the lens cap ;)

Its better then that, its JohnBdigital's cat and unlike Schrodinger the cat is still alive in both states

For those that dont know Schrödinger's cat here is a quote from Wikipedia
Schrödinger's Cat: A cat, along with a flask containing a poison, is placed in a sealed box shielded against environmentally induced quantum decoherence. The flask is shattered, releasing the poison if a Geiger counter detects radiation. Quantum mechanics suggests that after a while the cat is simultaneously alive and dead, in a quantum superposition of coexisting alive and dead states. Yet when we look in the box we expect to see the cat either alive or dead, not a mixture of alive and dead. click to see Schrödinger's cat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat)

Here's my first attempt. There is a noticeable difference between the RAW and the JPEG out of my 40D. These are straight out of the camera with no processing at all. All I did was resize them to be able to post as attachments (to keep the EXIF intact). The RAW is first and the JPEG second.

My Picture Style was thus:

Sharpness 4
Contrast +2
Saturation +1
Color Tone +1

The speed is nice - I'm actually thinking of dropping RAW altogether. . .

Do I actually need the extra information that's consuming my processor time, and disk space?

I feel the same way as Ed.

Exactly. In fact, I had to recover some images where my flash was fooled and underexposed and while the images weren't perfect I doubt I could have done any better if it were RAW. Downloading times are great, rendering in LR is super fast and exporting is quick too. It might be JPEG year round for me.

Totally agree - and to be honest, I've never had anything printed larger than 10x8

I haven't yet either except for a composite done 16x20. But I have sold some of my sports shots through SmugMug at 16x20 and they were from my XT, cropped some as well.

Bah, I've been shooting in JPEG since before it was trendy.

'Course, using the Powershot S3 doesn't leave me much choice, but still.:p

Jpeg is my usual mode. I've never subscribed to the RAW religion.

There are times when I use RAW - generally when faced with a high-contrast scene. Rather than select a jpeg picture style that's low contrast I just flip to RAW and deal with it later.

Going on a 3 day motorcycle ride up the California coast tomorrow. Pics to follow!

Well, I recently started shooting in RAW only, but haven't done a RAW + JPEG. Is there much difference in the shots between RAW and JPEG, or is it all down to PP?

Haven't taken many this month but these were messing around last weekend. I usually shoot jpeg, raw is a pain in the a**. I've blown jpegs up to 20 x 30 without any problems.

I do normally shoot RAW because I'm one of the rare nuts who actually enjoys post processing his images :)

I went out shooting JPEG tonight though, and here is a sample:

For the first time in, umm, at least a year, I shot some jpg on the weekend (out of necessity more than want - card space ran low and still had much more to shoot).

So here's my jpg contribution:

Another duo for the July JPG.

I got a bit confused when I went to apply an output sharpening at the end of my workflow, as these seemed pretty sharp already. Then I remembered I was shooting JPG :)

Why yes it is! :D I took a few shots yesterday, but nothing special. The light wasn't great. You can see a couple of the shots from yesterday with the Bigmos here. (http://www.pbase.com/madawson/bigmos_first_pics)

Congratulations :D. I love http://www.pbase.com/madawson/image/100281398 - it's a fantastic shot. How is the bigmos to handle? The largest / longest lens I've used is 70-200 f/2.8.

Thanks Ed.

The Bigmos is about 3 times heavier than my next lens, the 70-200 f/4 L. It is long!, but not too heavy. The OS really works well and stabilizes the images even at close range (< 10 feet). I need to use it more to see if I will like it. I broke my left wrist in High School and I experience some pain and discomfort when holding a big lens for a long time (like the 100-400 L at the air show last year). The Bigmos is a pund heavier than the 100-400 so we will see how I fair with it. My next air show is at the end of September so I need to know before then.
