View Full Version : Aperture 2.1 not reporting my lens correctly

The lens is the 120-300 Sigma F2.8 lens. It reports it as a Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4 EX Aspherical HSM.
Is there a way to fix this?

That's strange. What does DPP report it as? Might be the lens causing the problem. I'm not sure if it's changeable in Aperture...

not sure I don't have DPP installed.
Has anyone else with this lens experienced issues with aperture?

Post a picture with the full exif intact. We should be able to tell from there.

This should have full exif information

from CS3's file info - no lens info only the image data...

As per the Apple site: http://www.apple.com/aperture/tutorials/#adjustmetadata-editmetadata
The grayed out parts of the metadata cannot be changed in Aperture.

When I pull this into Aperture 2.1, the lens model is blank, but there is other metadata there.

Preview on Mac for the CR2 file shows:
- Lens Model: Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4 EX Aspherical HSM
Interesting though, is this from the same file in Preview:
- Lens Info: 120, 300, 0, 0
- Focal Length: 274

The raw file does show the lens model as being the Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4 EX Aspherical HSM.
As stated above, I do not think you can change this in Aperture 2.1, but someone will probably be able to help you out using another program.

Funny, the focal length is 274 mm - kind of long for a 17-35mm lens.

yeah at first I thought it was because of the 1.4 ext I used a few times, but then I started to notice that it reported that lens even with it off. Kinda annoying. I might give apple an email about it to let them know it isn't reporting correctly.
Thanks for all the help

 No problem.
In CS3, the lens is reported as 120-300 mm. Seems this maybe an Aperture only problem.

If both Aperture and Preview report it wrong, I would say its an OS X problem, not just Aperture.

Or the lens could be reporting wrong. DPP uses its own software to pull that info, not OS X (like Aperture, Preview and iPhoto do). That's why I was curious to know what DPP thought of the lens.

Lightroom shows the lens as 120-300mm. (doesn't say Sigma or such). Preview i'm getting the same as others.

so could it be canon software not writing it correctly into the exif?
