I am new to digital photography and welcome comments and suggestions so that I can improve. I have a brand new Canon A95.

Why would you want to improve it? It's a lovely picture and sure would grace the album.

Are they mother and daughter - great that the baby (who looks about a few weeks old) is looking at the camera.

Whislt the image works well in portraying Mother and Daughter, I don't care for the dark area on the outside, I find it distracting and feel that it makes it look a little contrived, as if it had been shot through a "heart shape filter" or such.

Just my honest opinion

This is a lovely image of a mother and child, as both Damian and David have alluded to. However I tend to agree with David in that the black matte effect is a bit OTT. I think a more subtle approach using a faint lighting effect in Photoshop or none at all might be beneficial.
I'm not a purist, I don't mind some manipulation when it helps. After all the image is manipulated from the second we press the shutter by software written by someone else in Japan etc.
Having said that, I can't fault the original image behind the matte. If you like it,go with it.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I did the black edging in photoshop using a black to transparent gradient. I did it to hide the ugly couch and other distractions in the picture. I welcome suggestions of other ways to hide the couch and stuff. Here is a small copy of photo before I touched it up. By the way, this is my first grandchild! Lots of photo opportunities to come!

Are you sure that's the same photo? Photoshop the smile too?

Your tight about the couch, the dark border looks better. Nice pic.
