View Full Version : Smugmug users: Are you happy with the service?

I'm very unhappy lately with the service provided by PBase (broken thumbnails, missing images). I'm looking for alternatives. One place that has the same features as PBase and some others is Smugmug.
I would like to hear from Smugmug users.... are you happy with the quality of the service?
Thanks,
Juliano

Hi,
Please take a look at my site www.kennyana.smugmug.com
Could you do that with Pbase? I don't think so :D
I have been using Smugmug for over a year now and have been very happy so far.
So easy to set up with the drag and drop window plus unlimited storage. Upload file sizes up to 8MB.
They service is top-notched. They really listen and care for our demands. Don't believe me? Visit their forum at www.dgrin.com and check out the support section.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Give them a try and you could use this coupon to save $5: bew0Ys29WwoW2
(unlimited usage)
Enjoy!
Ken
Edit: I just changed my site to my custom hostname
Now typing: www.kennyana.com or www.kennyana.smugmug.com both would go to the same place :-)

I also am unhappy with PBase, for other reasons (limited uploading, and size). I switched over to Smugmug yesterday, and am uploading my galleries as we speak. It's a little slow because of the sizes of my images, but so far I'm very happy.
I would suggest that anyone thinking of moving, check Smugmug out, and take the tours. They do offer a 7 day free trial, but I liked it so much that I'm staying.
Please check it out here:

smugmug is constantly improving.
I had pBase and moved to smugmug last year mainly because of their locked gallery feature (pBase offers that now too). I've been happy with smugmug. They are responsive to member needs as well.

I signed up for the pro service level and I love it. If you are handy with HTML and JAvascript, you can do a very good job of customizing the look of the site for yourself. The back end features are good. My only gripe is that thy limit batch uploads to 100MB. I shoot with a 1D Mark II, so I fill up 100MB rather quickly.
One other thing to note, is that SmugMug uses EZprints.com for printing fulfilment. EZprints quality rocks, and I had been using them in a stand alone fashion for a long time already. So, that was another selling point for me.

Pbase has really gone downhill over the past few months. What's wrong with them? I was a happy pbase user for two years and lately I've been thinking of changing hosts.

I just started with Smugmug. Extremely easy to set up and add to/manipulate. Got the "Professional" level. Not sure this was the best choice for me. Can see my photos at www.memoriesbygale.smugmug.com. Comments/critiques are welcome.

BTW, smugmug uses EZprint as their service. There were many complaints that the prints were too red. (Search dgrin.com) to their credit, they finally offered choices for different color casts. I still prefer shutterfly, but EZprint is getting close. I wish they would print comments/filename on the back of the prints like shutterfly does. hmmm maybe I'll suggest that :)

Funny seeing this thread, as I just updated my galleries on PBase and I've never had any problems with it. I also like the general layout and logic of use better, although Smugmug isn't bad, it's not just my cup of tea. Anyway, just to tell you guys that PBase is working perfectly at the moment (at least I haven't experienced any problems).
If you'd like, check out my PBase galleries too. I posted the link recently to the galleries forum, but here it is for quick acces:

Tell me if there's any trouble with the pages. Ps. You can always e-mail the PBase staff (Slug /Emily), if you are experiencing any problems that are not explained on PBase front page.

I am a veteran smugmug user and I wouldn't use any other service, mostly because of the many features and ease of use. During my trips to Europe and Africa, all I do when my camera's memory card is full is literally find an internet cafe, upload, and go - smugmug does the rest! This not only frees up my memory card, but lets folks back home see the places I've been while I'm on the go! You can save $5 during sign-up using the coupon sL2HLom4aoVlQ.

Signed up a couple of hours a go and so far I couldn't be happier. Easy to customize and it looks great. One gripe though - I signed up as a 'power' user and yet there's no way to protect images from 'right clicking', for that you have to pay an extra $50 to become a 'pro' user! :-(
Can I ask you smugmug users a quick question...do you upload your photos as originals (large files) or do you take time to resize them first to get a smaller file size?
Thanks.

Welcome to smugmug family, Paul!
I upload JPGs at quality 9 saved in pscs, no resizing. I'm not worried about people stealing my images at this very moment, I don't think I'm that good yet :p if they do, just don't let me find out, otherwise, trouble!
It's a shame that they only allow JPGs at max 8MB per file, otherwise I would upload 16 bit tiff file and upgrade to pro level, so I can sell large prints.

Well, I'm very happy with the service of smugmug.com, and I'm too a power user, and I'm dont worry of people to steal my pictures, I think that if you like to sell, or to upload big size pictures, get the Pro user, and then you can get automatically a PROOF word over all your pictures.
And in the power user you can upload the ORIGINAL SIZE one, and in the Customize Gallery, there is an option you can block users to see the original size, and only let them to see the small, medium and large.
cheers!

I am a bit confused, being a newbie to image hosting and all.
I do need a place to display and store images for friends and family to see. I would also like a place to back up my pictures.
Can I display all my pictures at full size (1-6M)? Can I stores copies of all my pics here as a backup or can I only upload a small slelection pics?
I have many pictures from the past 6 years that I would like to post.

Unlimited storage. File sizes up to 8MB. Batch uploads in 100MB increments. You can always get the original, but you can control whether visitors can see it; this can have many uses. As many categories and and subcategories as you want. I'll PM you with a link and password to a "protected" gallery, so you can see how it works, from a friends and family standpoint.

Yes, you can send them up full size, it just takes a while to do it.As long as "full size" is under 8MB. I've had to resize some of my images to get them uploaded. Upload speeds vary depending on ISP vendor. I try to upload at work, since my broadband provider at home is optimised for download speed.

Unless you have a pro account, then it's 16megs.
"smugmug allows you to upload any photo unless it exceeds the definition of enormous: 8 megabytes for standard and power users, 16 for pros — and up to 48 megapixels for all users. We make resized display copies for a great viewing experience. However, you may be shocked at how long it takes to upload them."
I realize that most users aren’t Pro Users, but it is still an option.
jfrancho
29th of June 2005 (Wed), 23:03
FYI, a pro account is only $99/yr. The standard deal is $29/yr. There is an intermediate package, but the value isn't there for me. The pro account may be worth it for other, better reasons: http://www.smugmug.com/pro/
Something I'm considering for the future.

i was thinking about signing up to pbase last week but it was so slow and there were areas that I couldn't access for some reason (for example, I couldn't view the sample stylesheets section). I sent them an e-mail asking some questions about their service and to date they have not responded. so at this point I haven't signed up. I looked at smugmug, and it looks fine, but man, i HATE the name of the site, which is probably why I still haven't signed up there. That may sound dumb, but when I refer someone to see my photos, I want it to sound professional, and PBASE sounds a lot better. Are there any other services anyone can suggest?

Yu can see my previous comments higher in the thread. Those are still true.
I hav a pro account with smugmug. As I mentioned, they've been very responsive to most suggestions. My two remaining issues are these:
1. There is a 100MB limit per upload session. You can launch multiple upload windows to try and get around this limitation, but in my experience that ususally causes a server error that terminates the entire upload process.
2. There is no mechanism of applying a sliding scale to prices, eg one 5x7 at $10, 2-3 @ $8 each and >5 for $30...
this would help a lot (specially for sports pictures where there is volume). Unfortuantely smugmug says it's simply not possible to impliment.
All in all, I'm glad I signed up with them.
Thanks to those of you who have used the coupon code I provided. I hope you are also happy with your choice. I do look at thos egalleries that are not locked :)

Try http://www.lifetimepix.com/photographer (http://www.lifetimepix.com/photographer) they do not charge any monthly fee. Also they offer a 6 months free web hosting if you need a web site, with unlimited email accounts. I found them while surfing the net on web site called, http://www.make-money-with-digital-camera.com (http://www.make-money-with-digital-camera.com/)
They also offer a free gallery script to show your work on your website. I do not know if they help with the web design but you can ask them.

Hey fetching,
You don't have to use xxx.smugmug.com a your site name. If you have a registered domain name, you can have smugmug use it as the url of your gallery.
See the explanation on their "pro" page, where there is an example using a business called "moonstonephotography.com"

Yes, they have 2 options:

* Protected Gallery - which is public but only be viewed with password provided by owner.

I have a SmugMug account also at picklesphoto.smugmug.com (http://picklesphoto.smugmug.com/)
I got it because I needed a place to "host" pictures of a few Baseball Camps for Kids. The parents could go there and see the pics of thier kids or teams,a nd order prints of more right from there. I didn't have to do anything once the images were uploaded. It was VERY handy and saved me a LOT of time and expense with printing.
I have recommended it to a lot of folks, and they have been pleased. There may be other sites that do a bit better job at printing, but SmugMug has a whole package that keeps getting better and better.
If YOU want to join, you can use this code ( L5xvhn5DEtHqs ) to save $5, Just enter it in the "Referred By" box when you sign up.

I am extremely happy with smugmug's service and their site is so user friendly and easy to use. You can create sub-categories, edit captions on all photos at once, edit photos on their site and your given a private link for your photos using your name or any name that you designate.
Recently my laptop crashed and I thought I lost a majority of my photos but I really didn't as they were all safe on smugmug's website. You can even order a back up cd/dvd of all of your albums on the site for $29. Believe me this is a plus since I lost a portion of my originals with the crash.
If you'd like to save $5 and enjoy a free 7 day trial, just use the code below:

I was considering Smugmug and Pbase, but now leaning towards smugmug.
I just wanted to make sure I'm clear on a few things first. Funds are tight right now so I think I will start w/ the basic and probably upgrade later. Is that easy to do? Can the basic acct. be customized? One person said that prints can be bought on the basic acct, another said only on the Pro acct? Which is it? Can you make individual protected galleries for different people, or are they lumped into one protected gallery? Are they still taking coupons?

1) Very easy to upgrade. Just one click of a button. They will pro-rate the balance of your account for the rest of your remaining term.
2) Custom header and custom look is available for Power and Pro users only.
3) If I understand your question correctly; the answer is Yes, you can assign different password for each gallery.
4) Yes, the coupon is always welcome.
Here is mine: bew0Ys29WwoW2
When you get your own account, they will give you your own coupon to refer to others.

I'm very unhappy lately with the service provided by PBase (broken thumbnails, missing images). I'm looking for alternatives. One place that has the same features as PBase and some others is Smugmug.
I would like to hear from Smugmug users.... are you happy with the quality of the service?
Thanks,
Juliano
I am trying out Smugmug, and so far, I am mixed on it. Seems like a good site, flexible, good performance, and no ads/spam, but I have had 3 downloads fail halway through, and the price for prints is on the high side. I'll keep tinkering with it, but for 50 bucks, its a pretty good bargain (power user)

I use the IE drag and drop for the uploads, Firefox for everything else, just like you.
It happened at home and from work, so I suspect the network connectivity is not a culprit..
oh well, other than that (3 times it has happened) I am pretty happy with the service. I like how they have "its a girl" themes (just had a baby girl), but no "its a boy"

It takes about 30 seconds, if you know how. Do a search on the forum for "watermark" and I'm sure you can find a tutorial.

The problem with adding a watermark to the image yourself instead of Smugmug doing it is that if someone purchases a print, it will come out with the watermark on it.
jfrancho
17th of May 2006 (Wed), 14:29
That makes sense though, if your allowing someone to buy a print at cost, why bother with the watermark. You're already giving the image away. If you are selling at a markup, you'd want to be able to protect it. I guess I'm missing some part of the eqaution here.

Different people use it for different things. Someone who just uses it for personal use might decide they want to watermark protect their pics, but then uncle Bob who lives 3 states away wants to buy pics of your kids can't.
I was mainly trying to point out the main gotcha that came to mind if you watermark your own pics.
I suppose this problem could be solved by either just having a private gallery or a password protected one.

Love your website photos. You have some very interesting and exciting landscape work. KC

I had smugmug for a year. I wasn't too keen on the black background everything had. It didn't look very professional. The fees were high and it's over-saturated. Something's wrong with the advertising too because I had minimal hits on my thumbnails and no hits on the larger images. At one point somebody used my coupon code which earned me money but that money seemed to vanish off their system somehow. My sales from smugmug? Zero. It's why I haven't put any effort in redesigning my photo website.

so basically you pay for pro account you make the prices, use your domain name you name the prices people buy and they print and ship and send you a check quarterly or monthly depending on revenue? does that sound roughly correct????

I've been using smug mug for about 2 years and have to say it has got better, but also a little bloated.
I know a kickarse page can be made using CSS and java and stuff, but it is still very complicated to get simple results for the front end.
At the moment I have changed things and use my own host and domain name while using smugmug only for gallery storage.
Have had few plroblems with them so far.

I made these statements back on page1 over two years ago and I still stand by the same ratings for SM. How many things can you say that about!
One thing I'd add is that their customer care with responding to help questions is amazingly fast. They don't always have the anser you want to hear, but they have always gotten back to me within minutes. I wish more bsuinesses were like SM.

You can add comments on the back of the photos. I have a copyright notice put on the back of mine. I exchanged emails with Chris McAskill the other day about their use of EZprints, as I'm not a fan of that lab. He said that they are considering using Mpix as a second choice for users.
is anybody selling any photos from smugmug?
Yes, but not much. I suppose it depends on how much one chooses to market their work. I use my account to sell sports images to parents. It was taking too much time to run to the lab with multiple orders, so I decided to go this route. The drawback is that in rural America, people are reluctant to use their credit cards online. Many also still have dial up and don't spend a lot of time online.
yup very happy with it :)
Me, too. Although I'm in the process of building my own professional site for weddings and portraiture, the Smugmug site will do nicely for sports and event images.

- I tried it for a year and have renewed - i.e. I decided to stay on
- they have new features in the pipeline
- their trail is free to the best and easiest way to check it out is to try it
- They're friendly and approachable -
So yes I am happy with them (still!)
