View Full Version : Question about IS on my new lenses

I received the 100-400 L and 300 F4L this morning. These are my first long lenses with IS. I know that Mode 1 is for mostly handholding and Mode 2 is for panning. Do I use either mode with a tripod at all? Do I use either mode with a monopod?
Thanks,
Ovi

Not with a tripod. You'll have to turn it off with the 100-400; I don't remember if the 300 auto-senses that a tripod's in use; most of the later IS lenses do. Opinions seem to vary on using with a monopod. If the 300 autosenses, you won't need to worry about that. With the 100-400 I'd say try working as you normally do and if the picture starts looking squirrely turn IS off.

Congrats Ovi.
I always use IS on a monopod with my 100-400.
PS: You can change your sig now that the lenses are here.

Both 100-400mm and 300mm use first gen IS.. so yes Both get turned off when used on a tripod.
I too tend to keep IS on when on a monopod... as there still is movement to be sure.
There are times though that remembering to switch to "panning mode" on a monopod would be benificial.
Personally,. I tend to forget though... and once it REALLY cost me big time...
....I have photos of a Red Tailed Hawk about 14 feet from me flying at eye level with a rabbit in it's claws to prove why panning with mode 1 IS on is ...not good... :(
(...but oh did they look good on the LCD... :( )
