EE developement news

Just some short main information of current developement version:

I have been coding a LOT lately, for getting finally the next version out, a version which has also the requested basic features needed for full commercial site usage. Also a full nested navigation system has been requested a long time and it is done.

Now the EE dev version has very secure user login system, and you can define user permissions. The current URL pass=xxx system is removed completely for being unsecure and inflexible. User login may give access to permanent personal lighbox with multiordering, certain size paths, certain exhibitions, upload permissions (later) and mail functions (e-card). A user can be defined as private or public which will allow or disallow multiple logins from same username (public user can be an organization, family etc.). There is still "unlogged user" (public), too, which you can privilege as you like.

EE has now unlimited group nesting, each group can contain groups and exhibitions. EE builds HTML/XHTML compliant dynamic UL list which is used as site map and also as dropdown menu. Any UL-compatible menu script (not included) can be used, I have used UDM4 in testing and it works very nicely (http://www.udm4.com/). Support for non-UL menu systems will follow.

Index page is template-based as list and photo pages. EE is tested and approved now up to MySQL 4.1 and Apache 2. PHP 5 support coded ("long arrays off" support etc.). Minimum PHP version needed will be 4.1.0. Imagemagick 6 support. PHP passthru() support.

Uncookied data has now automatic user-definable purge system, and data protection for those who browse the galleries at the moment of purge.

Powertools has now a Photodata Batch Tool which lets you edit several photos detail data in same page. You choose the items you want to edit, select photos and the edit forms are built for you.

Speed with extremely large galleries (tens of thousands of images or more) is improved (category issue fixed). Site attack security features added..

Lightbox feature has been added (only for logged users). E-card has been added (only for logged users). Optional image preload on photo page. New outputstyle (floating) "thumbs with titles". More styles.

Of course tons of bugfixes has been done, too.

Ok, that's it, now back to work. I have a release date set which I won't tell you :)

That would be interestinmg for me as well, since I am rebuilding my website at the moment. Is it better to wait for the final release or to install the old version?

Hi Pekka,
This is great news to hear as I'm about to setup a site for a friend and will wait for this new release. Maybe I don't fully understand what you have explained, but does this mean that it will be possible for each user to have their own separate gallery and upload (I think the open source Gallery does something similar)? I have been hoping that the engine would allow me to setup a site and then add my friends as users to allow them each to have their own gallery. Is this possible now? You say "...with upload permissions (later)" so I assume not. But even if it's later is this a type of functionality planned?

I just went to their website and pulled this from the features page:
"You start off with only one user, the Administrator (login name:admin). This account can do anything with Gallery. Typically you'll want to use the admin to create other users (which can also be administrators if you want). Users can be granted permission to create and maintain their own albums on a per-album basis (screenshot). Users can also self-register [0] (screenshot) and sign up for e-mail notification [0] (screenshot) when things in the Gallery change."

Thanks again for your great work on the slickest gallery system on the web. Looking forward to give the new version a go.

Best regards,
Kd
