Hi everyone, my name is Joe and I am new here. On Wednesday I made a trip up to B&H in NYC and dropped $4500 on some new equipment and - needless to say - I am itching for it to get here. (I had to get it shipped to avoid the absurdly high NY sales tax) I cut my teeth on an old Olympus E-10 and I figured it was time for an upgrade.

I was originally going to wait for the 5D replacement to come out but it is taking longer than I think most of us expected (and hoped for) so I opted for the 40D in the hopes of upgrading next year without a major financial setback. Here are the major things I purchased:

40D with 28-135mm kit lens and vertical grip
Canon 10-22 f/3.5-4.5
Canon 70-200 f/2.8L (non IS) :D
Bogen 190XDB tripod with ball leveler and 486RC2 head
Bogen 303 Panoramic head (QTVR)

I also picked up 4 4GB flash cards, extra battery, camera armor, UV filters, etc.

I know there are mixed feelings about the camera armor, but this camera's first duty will be at 14000 feet out in Colorado, and I'm not risking a naked body (mine or the camera's).

Everything should come tomorrow (Christmas in July!!!). Just wanted to introduce myself.

Joe

Welcome to the party!
I'm certain there are many here that feel betrayed by not getting to spend that $4500 for you but they'll get their chance to deplete your account further. We've already had inquires about your bag! LOL
Like LeeSC said, you'll find out about other stuff that you never knew you needed here!

Nice stuff! Hoping to see some shots from you in the future!

Welcome Joe,

Nice gear, like the no mucking around, in shop buy lots and leave.

Enjoy.

Thanks all for the warm welcome. I'll be sure to post some photos later, hopefully they don't shame me into the abyss - after several weeks of reading/searching I can tell that there are some world-class photographers here.

Be careful hanging around this forum as you will find yourself buying more and more and more....

No kidding. It took all the willpower I could muster not to get the 24-70 f/2.8L. I really wanted to keep the total under $5k. The kit lens should serve me well until my credit card heals...

Nice set up, got a bag?

Yes, it's a Tamrac Adventure 74 model 5374. I needed a bag to be as small as it can be because the entire thing has to fit inside my real hiking pack (a 90 liter expedition pack) and still leave me room for clothes, food, water, etc.

Oooh, just noticed your mention of location to shoot. Longs Peak trekker maybe? :-) Watch out for the mountain goats! LOL

Oops...apparently I posted in the wrong forum. Many apologies.

Actually I'll be out in the Maroon Lake area, with potential summit attempts on Maroon Peak and/or Pyramid Peak depending on the weather and snow conditions. I'd kill to get see some goats!

After that I'll be headed up to Grand Teton national park for hopefully some equally scenic opportunities. I want to get some serious use out of my new panoramic head.
