Awesome pics!
Do you mind sharing what settings you use? I will be out there in 90 minutes viewing the SF fireworks. :D
My plan right now is to use my 24-105mm, ISO 100 with f8-f11 and 2-8 secs time interval. I will probably be 1-2 miles from the location of the fireworks.

thanks Asheden. It was shot at F10 and 6 sec time interval ISO 100. I was using my 70-200 2.8 Non IS with my tripod. This was taken right in front of my house.

I will hopefully be able to submit some pictures later tonight

These were taken at the Castaic Lake afterbay about 45 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
1- The first four were taken with a Canon 20D and EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS on a tripod using a shutter release cable, Manual Mode on 'bulb' setting.

I feel like, looking at all of your shots, that I need to find a place with better fireworks! Some of yours are absolutely gorgeous.
Here are mine. The first is from the Charlotte Symphony performance, and the next two are over Lake Wylie (close to Charlotte, on the state border). I have a friend who is a professional photographer, and between the two of us we didn't get very many good ones... so it made me feel a little better that it wasn't just me! ;-)

I SO feel you! A few years ago, my husband and I were on vacation, and happened to be in San Francisco for the 4th. We were so excited about that, got a GREAT spot, and then the fog rolled in. Thick heavy dense fog.
From where we were sitting, you could hear them go off, and you could very occasionally see the fog turn a faint tinted color. It was a huge disappointment.

WOW!!! to get all of them synchronized is amazing....How wide is your lens??
I was thinking the same thing the first time I looked at this, but it's actually 4 separate pictures side by side. Look close enough and you can see the seams.

Just a couple from Dublin, OH. Handheld, so basically a bunch of squiggly lines. I shot at ISO 100, but still needed f/16 to not blow-out 1-2 second exposures. Brighter than I expected.

If anyone can throw out some recommended settings that sure would help a bunch!!...Good sturdy tripod helps a whole lot. Auto focusing is almost impossible. Set it to manual focus and focus on something at the same distance the fireworks are from you. Play around with the times and the f/stop but I have found that fireworks are very bright so even at f/8 or higher your going to get a solid image. You might also concider a shorter lens. Depending on how far away you are the 70-200 might be a tad to long even on it's shortest end.

What about the nifty or I also have a 28-105. I do not have a tripod well I do but it isnt very sturdy just a cheap one from Rat Shack. Do you think if I am too close the concussions will shake the camera?

The consensus is that you need a tripod & cable release. Beyond that, there are multiple choices on the photographer's end. Take the 50, 85, & 70-200. Depending on your distance to the fireworks, they all may work well, however, the 85 & L, will have the best sharpness of your lenses. Since you have a cheap tripod, an alternate to use is a sandbag/beanbag. Shoot as low of an ISO as you can go, depending on the expected brightness of the fireworks. I always shoot at ISO 100, and expose the sensor longer if needs be, to get plenty of light/ burst in the image.
Contrary to belief, you can use AF to get your focus locked in. I do it each time I shoot. I track the 1st burst into the air, and then pick up the burst with AF. Once I have AF Lock, I switch to MF. Most of the time, the Fireworks are going to burst in the same general proximity/ location. Beyond doing that, it comes down to personal style of what type of composition you are looking for in your images.
These were my settings the past 2 nights:
Body
Lens (once focus is achieved, then switch to MF)
ISO 100
F/11
Bulb
Cable Release
Tripod (Must be stable. If you are on grass, and have spikes, switch to spikes)
Exposure varies with how many burst you want in the shot, and a bit of luck with timing.
Hope these help.

Here are some fireworks pics from yesterday. So many of them turned out really well, so it was hard to narrow it down to just these for display purposes. Hope you like them!
The first couple were with the 70-200 f/2.8L IS, until I realize we were sitting too close, so I switched to my 28-135 at 28mm. All shots on tripod at 100 ISO in Manual mode with BULB as shutter and F/11 as Aperature. Exposures were as long as I held my finger on the shutter release button, ranging from .5 seconds to 10 seconds.

Not to rain on the firework parade...but all the fireworks w/o some kind of interesting backdrop (water, buildings, landmarks, etc.) start looking the same...mind included. Next year I'm going somewhere interesting instead of the local ball field :)
Anyhow, these were shot with a 5D, 24-70 F2.8, anywhere from F4.5-F13, from 2-3 seconds I think. ISO200.

Don't really see how you can do fireworks justice hand held. I used a tripod. f8 and tested exposures from 3-5 seconds. I found 3 seconds best for me.

I agree about all the shots start to look alike when you don't have interesting foregrounds. With small town fireworks it's hard to get interesting foregrounds. I would love to shoot some over water but there's none close to where I live. Price you have to pay living in a small town.

This is the first year that I have tried shooting fireworks and I would really like to thank everybody at POTN that has taken the time to share their techniques and tips with the rest of us. I shot about 160 pictures in 20 minutes and only had a handful that didn't turn out. Previously, I didn't have a remote shutter release so I ordered a TC-80N3 that came in on the 3rd. It was really great to use for fireworks. I just dialed in the exposure duration that I wanted and then all I had to worry about was framing. Here are a few that I grabbed and ran through some quick PP. The bad part is now I have to wait a year to practice some more.

Many beautiful shots here. I probably shouldn't even be showing this. I used to think it was a decent picture but now I'm not so sure.

Well it seems to be i was the only person on POTN that went to Great Meadows in The Plains, Virginia. It was a great day of activities and a great fireworks to boot.. Anyway. Here is some of my fireworks.. How did I do? Of course i forget to check my ISO setting so i ended up taking all my firework pictures at iso400. I need to get in the habbit and check that.

Taken with the 10-22 at 10mm, ISO 100, f/16, 20 seconds, tripod mounted obviously. Saturation boosted a bit in photoshop and a little shadows/highlights applied as well.
wow u said 20 seconds? to me it seems much less than 20 seconds, ...I would have expected a little different fireworks' shape then.
anyway, very good picture!

This was my best shot, I was waaayyy to close, 1 foot away from the caution tape, but I like to be right under it when the finale goes off, it pounded my chair an inch lower in the dirt..

Thanks alot, I wish I was in a building and out of the rain lol, but I was over in the Iwo Jima Memorial Grounds on the Virginia side. The whole grounds are on the hill side, and it's one of the places you get to see all three...
