What size images for website

What size image do you use for webpages, I am in an area where alot of people still use dial up?

I use 72 dpi and max width or height of 900 pixels.

I like to go a little smaller, usually 640 on the larger dimension. This allows me to keep a bit more detail by not compressing so much. I like to stay around 50KB, depending on the amount of detail in the image. For particularly good images or ones that deserve showing the details I'll go to 800 pixels and try to keep it under 90KB.
