Using the setting for Large and superfine (gives me the fewest photos except for RAW) meaning least compressed, my typical file size is about 3 meg. This is not all that much larger than files from my old G2 which only had 4 megapixels. Is there some explanation for this, as I expected that a 7 megapixel camera would create closer to 5 or 6 meg files?

They may have changed the compression algorithm (JPEG covers a number of related image compression algorithms), or you may, so far, have been shooting highly-compressible subjects.

I have a S70. And I try to shot almost all the time in RAW, but when I use JPG L in SUPER FINE, depends on the subject I am taking the photo. If its a image with lots of white or one color areas, like if you shot a wall, or a forest. The one with the wall will be considerable smaller than the one of the forest.
In RAW my files are between 5.9 to 7.2mb depending on the photo.
In JPG L Superfine, my files are between 2 to 6 mb depending on the photo.

cheers.
