sorry if this has been covered before, but have to learn sometime and couldn't really do a search when you don't know what it is called or is for that matter.
Canon s5is
after taken a picture then viewing in play mode, i press display twice (to get the information of the picture) There is a spot in the picture flashing gray and black on a subject.
What is 'the camera' telling me and what can i do about it?

Not sure about the s5is, but on Canon DSLRs that means that you have blown the highlights, i.e. the camera has recorded no detail in these sections. Usually happens on very bright reflections or when the sky is white.
If you can post the picture we can help you determine how not to do it again as there are several solutions.

also sorry for making a short thread, but maybe someone else can learn from it too

You're welcome. :) Have a read up on exposure to prevent it happening again.

Thanks! I thought I knew all the tricks and menus on my S5 by now but I rarely use the detailed info view on playback so I had to confirm this is indeed the case for the S5. It's mentioned in the advanced user guide p.22.
