It depends on what event you are shooting...For concerts and indoor Party, sport 70-200/2.8L IS .. or 135/2.0.. if you can get closer 85/1.8 is good too.
But if you are talking about outdoor event, it may require some fast tele prime... tho a good zoom like 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS is good in general for most outdoor sport shooting in a sunny day.

I use a 70-200 2.8L (non IS) for sports. For daytime games I also use a 1.4 TC. IS will not help you in sports since it is designed so that you can hand hold the camera at slow shutter speeds and you need fast shutter speeds for most sports, However if you can afford IS, get it. The 85mm 1.8 is also a good lens for basketball in dark gyms where flash is not allowed. I shoot at f/2.2. A nice bargain is the 50 f/1.8 which also serves well when near the basket although I primarily use the 85mm. The 100-400 mentioned above would be nice to have.

best advice is to ..Shoot..shoot and shoot again. I do not think online courses would help but thats me. I would do a LOT of reading.. Podcasts.. and SHOOT more..
