I am trying to set up my flash control settings on my 40D, and the only things that show up as options are Flash Exposure Compensation and E-TTLII as editable. The other settings are greyed out. Also, when I try and go into the External flash custom function settings, it tells me "This menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off" How can I get these things working together? The 40D manual says to look at the flash's manual, and the flash's manual is useless in regard to this.

I don't own either of those, but my first thought is that you might be in auto or program mode on the camera. If you are try switching to manual, Tv or Av and see if that helps?

I'm in AV mode. Same deal with manual mode on the camera

The 580EX is not controllable from the 40D menu. You need the 580EX II for that.

Thanks Leo. Guess it's change the settings on the flash or upgrade. Not a really big deal, but thanks for the help!

i have a 40d and two 580ex mk1 this is not a problem to me since the 580 mk1 is easier to use than the mk1 IMO
