Help with purchasing filter(s)

I have never used square/rectangular filters before so I would like some more experienced input before I buy anything.

I have a 40d with the kit lens, a 10-22mm and a 70-200mm f/2.8.

Based on reading various threads here on potn, I think I can assume I need/want:

Lee Foundation Kit
72mm and 77mm Adapter rings
Circular Polarizing filter with 72mm step down ring

Beyond that, I would be pretty much just guessing as to what filters to buy, and I don't feel like doing any expensive guessing.

Landscape shooting is in my immediate future, so I would like to get something like 3 stop variants of a GND filter and 3 stop variants of a ND filter. I think that may be all my current budget allows (maybe even more so).

I know the Lee kit is made to use 100mm filters, but when I get to a site like 2filters.com, the numbers become confusing.

Any advice or recommendations (brand, vendor, etc.) are appreciated. I would like to buy this all from the same place and I need them by friday so 2 day shipping must be an option. Hopefully I'm not out of luck on that one...

The 10-22 and 70-200/2.8 both require 77mm filters, and therefore just the 77mm adapter ring and a single 77mm CPL. Not sure where the 72mm fits in with what you listed as your gear. However, you will need the wide angle adapter ring if you plan on using the filters with the 10-22. You should also be able to use this same ring on the 70-200 zoom (I can't see how it have any negative effect).

You have a choice of several filter brands for the square/rectangular. I'd recommend the Hitech brand...very good 4x5 filter at a middle-of-the-road price. The Lee filters are bit higher priced, but they're 4x6. Either will work with the Lee foundation kit holder. To start with, a 2-stop soft and a 3-stop hard should get you going.

Doesn't the kit lens need a 72mm ring? I'm not sure, but at B&H they sold me two 77mm UV filters and one 72 UV filter...I assumed the kit lens was 72mm. With a step down (or up...? I have to check how that works again...) adapter, I could use the 77mm CPL with the kit lens, right?

Sorry...I missed the fact that you have a kit lens...my brain only picked up on the 10-22 and 70-200. Yes, you can use a step down ring to mount the 77mm CPL on the 72mm kit lens.

The wide angle adapter ring that I refer to is the Lee 77mm Wide Angle adapter ring. (Lee makes two rings in the 77mm size...normal and wide angle). You need this ring to prevent vignetting on a wide angle lens. It basically allows the filter holder to sit back a few more millimeters on the lens barrel. The adapter ring screws into the filter threads on the lens barrel, then the holder attaches to that.
