 Am I doing something wrong here??

I set the 550 as master (attached to my 10D), I set the 420 ex as slave...........I press the "Pilot" button on the 550 (550 fires, 420 fires) good!!!

Now, I want the master flash to not fire...........so I press SEL/SET until I see the master flash icon (ON/OFF option)........choose OFF and I see the (Z) icon flash behind my 550.............take a shot and the 550 still fires!!!! What am I doing wrong???!!!??? I am going crazy!!!

HELP!!!

What you are seeing is the communication between the 550EX Master and the 420EX Slave. They have to communicate by a series of pulses from the master. It's the way it is supposed to be. I was also surprised by that when I started using wireless flash.

Yes. The 550 must emit visable light pulses for the slave to fire.

I call it the data pop. I don't know what Canon calls it, or if they call it at all. We don't confuse it with the main pop that way.
