I'm planning to get to my local track for the first time with the 300D, and thought i'd get out and try practicing a few shots of cars and stuff on the road, however I was drawn towards the airport, and ended up taking a few shots there instead... i think i'd head back another time, but wondered if anyone had any good tips for making civil aircraft look interesting?

First tip.... Don't shoot the bottoms. They are boring. The shot is great though. Try to get near either the departure or the approach end. This was you can get the aircraft on climb or final approach. www.airliners.net (http://www.airliners.net) is good website to look at for ideas of how to shoot aircraft..

Also, try to shoot the side of the plane with light on it! Nice attempt there

These arent the best of shots, but they show what you can do by changing angles. I find landing shots are a lot easier becuase the planes are only flying around 160 knots.

The bottoms can be interesting if you get the gear cycling up. I take a lot of aircraft pictures.

Angle. Making a commercial jet look interesting is all about the angle of shot you can get. It's also imoportant to get the lighting right so that you can see detail on the plane.

Some nice shots all. If anyone is attempting airliners.net, just remember to crop them tightly. Don't leave empty bits of sky. Most of us, think it looks fine, but the screeners will give many faults, such as Bad Motiv, Bad Angle, Bad Light... Just remember to read FAQ, and not make any mistakes. But they look cool. :)

I do like Cadwell's shot best. Nice 744.

Wow I would love to do some air craft shots.. do any of you US shooters feel self conscious when taking pictures at commercial aircrafts? especially with a long telephoto.. :(

I don't. I just snap the shot and not worry about. But I do have an advantage when shooting aircraft since I work at a major airport.

Well, I took on board some of the advice i got here and revisited the airport... and here's a couple of pics from this afternoon's efforts.
It's quite tricky to get some nice viewpoints, but I hope you can see some improvement from the original pic i posted.

I think both these were taken with the 75-300 IS lens

As I'm just getting into photography i'm still deciding on what subjects I really enjoy taking pictures of, it must be said that it was fun being down at the airport for an hour or so this afternoon.

That is where I spend the better part of my day since I work at a airport. Always have my camera with me. On a different subject, hopefully my new lens )85mm prime) and flash (420EX) we be here tomorrow before I fly to Ohio for a week a schooling.

That is a very nice lens. How much did you pay? Great pics. Much sharper than my 70-300 IS.

@ 200 total but I traded a couple basic lens and added some $$$
its a great lens if you can find a good copy, they are long since out of production. mine was made in 1989! Best place is here in the marketplace. FM.com or yor local Photo store. No you can't have mine, well at least not until I get my 35-350L or 100-400L. Then I might sell it, but that will be at least a year away.

I did have the 75-300 before. not the USM or the IS version. just the EF III here is a few photos from it. 75-300 EF III (http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=337052)
EFIII (http://www.jetphotos.net/viewphoto.php?id=320523)

Wow, what a great range of shots on a.net. Well done.

I sent a few in mid February. Had a few rejects for "BadDirty" - which means either sensor dust, or dirty lens. Luckily, mine was just a dirty lens. It's only noticeable in an image, when you edit it to say 200% contrast level, or perhaps if someone had their monitor contrast on max. Quite picky, as it wasn't noticeable on a standard screen.

http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?photographersearch=Warren%20Williams&distinct_entry=true

I've also just uploaded a stitched together view of the 23L approach path to NZAA.
http://wazz*****scity.com/20d/merged_nzaa_small.jpg
This was 4 images. This is where I would shoot all the airborne shots. But the closeups are at a secret place through the fence.

Well I've also had my share of rejects.......but its taught me a lot about technique and PShop processing.

I only started uploading last June, and am quite pleased with my acceptance levels now. I've even managed to sneak a few past the screeners with minor defects..:)

Don't think your 23L shot will make it as its 'modified' and 'bad size'
