Canon SD600 Postcard View

I want the date to appear on my photos but it seems I can only have the date appear if I use the "postcard" mode. What exactly is the postcard mode? I have read the user guide until I am blue in the face but can't understand just what a "postcard" view means.

Is it true that I can only have the time and date appear if I use the postcard view?
