View Full Version : Is A75 a worthy substitute for the S30 or am I getting ripped off?

Several weeks ago I took my S30 in for repair. It was taking overexposed pics, to the point they were completly washed out. I had bought the extended warrenty, so I was not worried about the cost. I was called the other day to come and pick up my camera. When I got to the store the clerk handed me a new A75. I of course was not expecting a new camera, and was not familiar with the A75 and was not please. I did not take it, I decided to see if first if I was getting a worthy replacement, cause i loved my S30 (so heartbroked). Seemingly the A75 is pretty much up to par performancewise, but it just doesn't stike me as well built, the S30 had a metal body, plus it took RAW pics. I chose the S30 over the A60 because it seemed better quality.

Should i accept this replacement? I bought the S30 for near $700 (CDN) and the extra warrenty which was $60+, and they are now trying to give me a camera I can buy for $300 because the repair will cost them $600. Should I push for a more better replacement, something along the price of what I paid, since I purchased warrenty at a price to protect a $700 camera (warrenty price was in accordance to purchse amount).

Well the S30 has been discontinued, hence why they want to give you an A75. To them its close enough to an S30, i.e. it has the same MP rating (3.1MP).

Its a VERY good camera, all the A series are, in terms of operation its very similar to the S30, and should take equaly as good photos.

However as you mentioned it has a plastic instead of metal body, it dosn't shoot RAW, and it also uses differnt batteries (AA's).
If you can live with those differnces knowing that you will get similar quality photos then you could just accept it and save some hassel.

But if you shoot RAW, and you have some spare batteries for the S30, and you like the smaller compact size of the S series then I say kick up a fuss.
Go back to the retailer and point out the differnces, including any accesories you may have for the S series that won't work with the A75, e.g. case, spare battery etc.
Point out that you like to shoot RAW and use it all the time instead of JPEG.

And read all the fine print in your warrenty, if you purchased it to protect against a $700 camera, then they either owe a fixed S30 upto the value of $700, or a new camera to the value of $700.
The A75 is not worth even half of $700.

Thanks for the insight, I've been thinking along the same line. I'll have to call the warrenty company to give them a bit of a hard time, can't hurt. but if need be the A75 will surfice quite well picture quality wise and function wise. As for components I'm hoping to at minimum get them to supply the batteries and charger. Althought I have a preferance for the S series for thier size, shape and more solid feel. In the end I just want to feel I got a suitable replacement and the feeling of getting my money's worth for the warrenty I purchased.

I have an S30 and if I was in your shoes I would demand a S60 or S70. The metal body of the S30 feels great in your hands and the plastic A series is no replacement
