I work for a school newspaper, we have many Indian students here at the university- most of them coming for our School of Engineering. I've had to take photos for several stories, but every time I take a photo of an Indian woman for a story, she absolutely refuses to allow me to publish the photo. This has become very frustrating. Is this coincidental, or is it a religious or cultural thing that I dont know about?

Ask,,are they Indian or Pakistani?? Pakistani are Muslem and don't usually like to be photographed especially the women..
It may be a Visa issue,,are they there on a student's visa??

first thing, you have no right to screw somebody's privacy. explain them why you would like to take their picture and request their permission before you take the picture.
not everyone in the world are same..

There is nothing religious or cultural about it.
Do you ask them to pose in the nude, perhaps? :)

public places are not private, therefore no privacy is being 'screwed'.
fair game.

^ Exactly, a public place where there is "no reasonable expectation of privacy" is fair game. But since the OP is "shooting them for a story" it sounds a bit strange that they all refuse to allow the pictures to be published.

You're rather hostile. Anyways, policy always dictates that I get the name (and thus permission) when shooting people if at all possible, however this has to be done after the photo is already taken, otherwise the shots appear (and are) posed, which isn't at all good for photojournalism.

They might be on a student Visa- most of them were actually from India. It's pretty typical, I would go through my usual routine- the men would give me their names, and their home town (One in India), but the women would refuse for their photo to be published. I respect this, however, it's VERY annoying, especially considering they are not the only people in the photo. They ruin a good photo opportunity.

^Sounds pretty selfish not respecting someone's beliefs. Get over it and move on. Yes it is more than likely a cultural thing and they could be Muslim. Still, deal with it and maybe learn to stop taking photos of them.

Being an indian, i can just tell that it has nothing to do with religion. Not sure about their personal views on putting pics on internet.

Being Indian you would know Indian is not a religion.
Besides, hard to tell if the OP even knows what's really going on or talking about.

i surely understand that indian isnt a religion. I just marked it as a generic remark, that no religion in India prohibits putting pics on internet (if i am not wrong).
If you know more about India, please let me know. May be you'll add some extra knowledge about my own country.

My roommate and many of my friends are Muslim, and they have no problem being photographed.

My editor will love that.
"How the hell did you get NO photos?"
"Oh, well some people at POTN suggested that I needed to be absolutely sure everybody I came across had written permission!"

If you have a problem with a thread or post, then you only have to click the report post button. It is the little read triangle under a users avatar.
However, all I see so far is a posting having a problem taking photos of people and getting their permission to print the photos.
I will however add a reminder that we do not allow religious or political discussions here.
As long everyone thinks before they post there won't be any problems
With regard to the original problem:
I know plenty of Indian women, from a variety of places in India with a variety of backgrounds, and none of them have objected to being photographed, or mentioned anything that would indicate an objection to it.
That doesn't mean these students do not have a legitimate reason why they don't a photo of themselves published.

Why would they? It's a legitimate question by the OP.

I am pretty sure, it has nothing to do with any religion. It could possibly be because of so many morphed images floating on net these days. I think girls dont want their pics uploaded on internet, as they fear it might be used in wrong sense.
