Does anyone have a picture of the Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens on the 20D? I am strongly considering buying this lens and would like to see it mounted on the camera so I can get an idea for it's size and looks. Thanks so much to anyone who can post a picture or point me in the right direction!

I held that lens recently in B&H, quite by accident. I went in and asked perhaps a silly question, but one which stumped the salesman for a few minutes. I wanted Canon L glass, zoom, putty (white?) color, but the smallest one they had.

That's what he handed me. As I already have the 70-200 2.8 IS, I handed it back. I can tell you that it is quite slim, perhaps half the size of the 2.8 and seemed quite nice.

"Half the size" might be a bit of an exaggeration although I will concede that the f/4 is half the weight of the f/2.8 IS L.

The f/2.8 IS L is 7.7 inches long and 3.4 inches in diameter (max). The f/4 is 6.8 inches long and 3.0 inches in diameter. That's more than half the size of the f/2.8. :D

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll try to measure that sizing against my Tamron 28-75mm for comparison on the 20D. But if anyone has a pic they could post I would be most greatful because I really want to see what it looks like on the camera! :D

With or without the grip? I'm at work right now, but I can run home in an hour or so and grab my camera...

Without the grip would be great...as I don't have a grip for the 20D......yet.

Thanks!

Wow, I'm surprised by the dimensions and especially by the picture.

Perhaps I was holding a different lens, as it truly seemed much smaller than my 2.8

As you seem (are) to be so knowledgeable, can you tell me what I was holding? The only hint I can provide is that it is the smallest putty colored zoom, at least according to B&H.

Thanks

It probably was the 70-200 f/4. However, the look of lenses s can be deceiving, especially when they are not mounted on a camera and are sitting in a display case next to other, bigger lenses. For example, I was in a photo store once and saw a 70-200 f/4 sitting on a shelf next to the 300 f/2.8. I can tell you that the 70-200 f/4 certainly looked like a miniature lens compared to the 300. :)

I know this is a noobie question, but what is that on the front of the lens. The wide black thing at the very front?

That's the lens hood.

Thank you for posting that Thomas. It helps a lot. After everyone talking about how small the lens was, I was expecting something not much bigger than my Tamron 28-75mm on the 20D. Maybe it's because this will be my first telephoto lens, but it looks very large to me (especially with the lens hood on). Now all I have to do is find a good deal on a used lens!
