View Full Version : Which (inexpensive) point & shoot for a 10 year old kid?

I would like to purchase an inexpensive point and shoot for my daughter to take on a trip. Unfortunately they are leaving on Saturday, so I probably can't mess around with Ebay.
I'd like a balance between cost and quality. In other words, I don't think an $89 P&S that will be junk in 6 months is worth the investment, and I also don't think a $450 G9 is the right camera for her. CF cards would be a bonus, but I don't expect that to be an option since most have gone to SD.
It is a fishing trip so most pics will be outside, in a boat (so a 2000x zoom isn't necessary). ;)
Any suggestions?

A720Is, not too expensive and has enough features, decent zoom and picture quality to keep her busy for a long time.

Thanks for the recommendation.
I checked B&H, they are about $190. That's in the ballpark. Thanks.
Anyone else? (Doesn't have to be Canon by the way)

You can't go wrong with a Canon SD1100IS. Great features and all the latest enhancements and getting so cheap now. Don't know how they can have such a great build quality for the price.

I have a 720IS. Keep in mind that they are sensitive to water. I don't know how much it would take, but a good splashing would probably not be a good thing.

You don't have an old one to hand down? My 13 year old daughter has both my old SD100 & SD500 to torture. Maybe you need to upgrade yours? ;)

I'd go to your local Best Buy, Circuit City, whatever and get the cheapest Canon Powershot they had. They don't go obsolete nearly as fast these days and even the lowest end Powershots are quite capable cameras.
Probably something like this:

thankx Bruce, Gail and others for your suggestions.
My hand-me-down is a broke P&S and that won't work, but thanks for the suggestion.
I'll look more at clearance cameras.
thanks,
Tom

I had A510 when I was 15 and I was quite happy with it. [Old camera I know.]

Shoot, not Canon? Don't need to be rechargeable, the Samsung S75 or S750 or something around that, as I believe they've replaced it, would be perfect. They are around or under $100 but great little cameras. My wife uses one at work for simple snapshots and it does just fine.

For the money there is no way in hell you can beat the A720IS, it's features and abilities are well known on this forum and revered by most of it's members, that is why you see so many people recommending it. You came here asking a question that the bulk of the people answered (you could have also searched), now you say you are going to check out the clearance cameras!
Tell you what, don't listen to anyone here, go to Wall Mart and get her a $6.00 buck Fuji film camera or try listening to the people who know:cool:

tomd,
you don't say where you are? If you're in a large city, go to craigslist and buy a canon S100, S230, S330 or S400 for a song and let her sent it on auto and fire away, theses are the old TANKS of the ELPHS. You can't go wrong?

My 13 yr old got an A470 for her birthday. Works well so far, only $130, uses SD, same as my A570
