Some of many shots taken over the GP weekend. Most of the shots are from Friday and Saturday when the weather was good.
For the panning shots at 1/100 or 1/125 I was only getting about 1 decent shot from maybe 20....It was difficult getting used to the speed of the cars.

cheers,
Was lucky to get a guest pass to the BRDC, so the shots were taken at the club house at the pit entry, and at the Farm, which is on the inside of the circuit at the Abbey chicane. The porsches were shot on the top floor of the porsche centre on hangar straight.
Was using Tv mode. The lighting was changing so manual wasn't reliable enough, and I had to rattle out the shots at 6fps.

Very nice set of shots. The colors really pop. I really like the perspective in #6. Nice job on the panning. I would like to see a little more room for the cars to move into, not that there is anything wrong with tight shots.

Thanks guys,
The weekend was awesome, and such an opportunity to have close access. I still need to spend more time on panning, but after a few hours was getting better results. Saw the other thread of practice day photos and the poster said he was panning with just a single shot. I've got a long way to go.
I adjusted the Pictures Style on the 40D to get the colours. Used a 70-300 IS USM lens and a mates old 80-700 F2.8 which was really sharp. I'm amazed at it's optics as the lens is rattling the manual focus doesn't work, but it produces amazingly sharp photos. It's the first time I've seen what a good L lens does.

No. 6 was the only focused shot of Lewis. I found with the McLarens it was harder to autofocus. As my panning technique wasn't so good I didn't feel confident enough to set the focus manually and get the one shot, choosing instead to rely on autofocus and continuous shooting. With the darker cars like the red bull and toro rosso I consitently got more focused shots.
Thanks for the comment about front space, I'll see what I can do with that one

Sorry, I'll remember for next time.

I like some of those, good to see someone using a slow shutter speed to get some good motion :)
You were shooting at 6fps? Must've had thousands of shots then lol. Might find your keep rate is actualy better if you shoot just one or two shots per pan rather than letting rip.Taking 1 or 2 decent ones works better for me than 10 average shots of the same car. My 2 cents anyway :)

Indeed. Personally I always find that single shot mode is better for getting your hand in. Because then you're much more likely to be focusing on one shot and follow the car more smoothly.
Continuous shooting has it's advantages but it's also a bit like firing a heavy machine gun with no training, you're going to be shooting all over the place!

Yeh I like that analagy. Like on Call of Duty 4, you're more accurate taking a couple of (accurate) shots and getting the kill rather than letting rip and spraying bullets everywhere
Anyway I like #6, nice motion and an angle you don't often see

agreed about getting the single shot. however as this was my first time at a gp with good access, I didn't want to lose shots in the learning process, so I fired away, heavy machine gun style. Having said that, my accuracy did get better through out the day, and I did end up with some reasonable shots.
I am aiming for the single shot technique, it's just going to take quite a bit of practice esp when shooting at 1/100.

Great shots all around. I really love the "UPS" Porsche, too bad about the silly old safety fence.

That's another thing, there seems to be two positions on shutter speed.
On one hand you have the people who whack it up as fast as they can in the belief that it will give them a super sharp image. More often than not though this simply produces a car that despite moving over 100mph looks like it is parked.
Then on the other hand you have the people who use stupidly slow shutter speeds thinking that it's going to give stunningly artistic effects.
Whilst I'd agree that in general for motorsport you want to use as long a exposure as you can get away with, it's always worth bearing in mind that long exposure panning is hero or zero and, it has to be said mostly zero stuff.
What I'd suggest is that on your learning curve you sit some where in the middle of the fence and play safe with the exposure time. I mostly use 1/200 - 1/500 even for head on shots.
This usually means that you get a good stock of images that are well focused, sharp, yet have adequate motion blur with either the tyre walls giving the impression of rotation thanks to blurred identification, blurred edges on 3/4 head ons, and blurred background.
Also sometimes, at least for single seaters, don't be embarrassed to use Aperture priority mode, and let the the camera decide on the shutter speed for you. That way you don't have to react so much to the light conditions.
I reverted to AV mode a few times at the recent Silverstone F1 test, after getting thoroughly irritated by the constant change of light due to clouds shifting all the time. (obviously for cars with headlights, manual is still best)
This is always a good tactic to make sure you get your banker shots, with those in the bag, you can start playing about with funky exposures.

Heh, a BRDC pass is good for photographers. I had an invite this year, but couldn't go.
Nice shots.

JImages, I did some paning at higher speed like 1/250 and /320 and found that I could get a lot more keepers, but I really liked the extra washed effect of shooting at lower speeds. Good point about getting your keepers and then playing around with the more arty type shots. I played around with M, Av, and Tv according to what I wanted to achieve.
Now have to figure out where to go next, that will allow a non-press pass good shooting locations. The BRDC pass does spoil you a bit....

I believe Mc Larens were a bit faster than the Red Bull and Toro Rosso ; it could explain why you had more success with one rather the other one.
