I know this is somewhat of an apples to oranges type comparision but you can get a used 1ds (sometimes even with a remaining warranty) for approximately $3500. Basing the decision strictly on picture quality - versus crop, MP, etc. - Do you think a used 1ds is 2K better than a new 20d?
Thanks for the advice!

You might want to do research on the high-ISO performance of the 1Ds. It's nowhere as good as the 20D from what I've read. But don't take my word for it, see for yourself.

Basically, that's my answer, too. I guess it really depends on how used the 1Ds is, but this is a professional body designed to take a lot of use/abuse and to deliver world-class results in the process. The 3 megapixels extra can't hurt, either.

I was considering a 20D as a backup camera, I rented one for a week. It has a lot going for it, but the 3mp difference made me decide to go for a 1Ds as a back-up to my 1Ds mkII. Like everyone has said it will depend on what it will be used for.

I've thought about this myself. If you do interiors, the lack of a crop factor on the 1Ds would be very nice since your wide angles will be wide. You could get by with a 20mm instead of a 15 or 16 mm. The sensor is larger and each photosensing point (forgot the term)is larger than the 20D. The quality is going to be better on the 1DS. On the other hand, I use video out all the time on jobs and the 1Ds does not have this. The digic II processor works great on flash and is very quick on the 20D. I have two 20 D's and love the cameras but don't like the 1.6 multiplication factor for my wide angles. I believe that I would rather have 2-20D's than one 1Ds but that's my opinion and based upon my photography. I don't think you can fo too far wrong with either of these beauties.

I do Real Estate as well and I have the 20 D and the 17-35 Tamron and it gives me enough of the room for good results without it looking like your in a glass bowl. I roigninalloy b0out the Canon 10-22 and did not lioke the way the room looked so I changed.
I assume your not talking about the 1Ds MKii but the old one. Then I would opt for the 20D because of it speed in processing files and lag time. It has allot of features the old 1Ds does not.
Also with the saved money you can buy other lenses. Let's see for $4400.00 I have a 20D, a Canon 70-200L/Canon 100-400L/Tamron 28-75 F2.87/Tamron 17-35 F2.8/Kenko 2X ext./a backpack/ and a few Cf cards.
Thats your choices.

All your photography screams "wide angle". 1Ds is a far superior camera in terms of image. The 20D is obviously newer and performs very good in areas, but in terms of overal image output, you can't beat the 1Ds cameras, I actually tried one 2 weeks ago, and it is truly awsome.
Not even the 20D ISO performance can put it close to the 1Ds.
Hey, if you can spend $3500, a used 1DMKII will go for about $3800.
The 20D is just an upgraded 10D, mostly functional upgrades rather then image, none of us would compare that to a 1Ds would we?

Full frame 11mp DSLR images
Yummy.
Even if you ARE going to do sports, i'd much rather have 3 11mp images then 5 8mp images from a lessor sensor.
