View Full Version : transferring images to PC without using camerawindow etc?

hi, I've got an S60, and the transfer software seems really buggy ( and slow!!)
is there a better way to transfer images? can I just browse using windows somehow, or is there a 3rd party util that WORKS?
camerawindow will work sometimes, but often the hard drive just spins on my PC & it won't autolaunch, plus I can't even launch ( manually) any of the canon utilities programs. once this happens I'm screwed...then the only way to get anything work is to totally uninstall the software ( + twin driver) & reinstall again..and that's a pain in the ass.
FWIW the camera is OFF before I hook it up, it briefly shows an image, then the light turns orange & it appears to be in transfer mode.
also I am right-clicking on the icon in the taskbar & exiting before I unplug the USB cable & cam
am using w2k OS
thx for any advice!

holy crap!!
I just figured out what the problem was...in w2k the environment variables for my temp directory were set to a folder that didn't exist, in my userprofiles
I must have deleted the c:/userprofiles/local settings/temp dir during a cleanup!!
anyway, it works now....even see canon dumping stuff in there during the transfer.
so if anyone else runs into this prob, this could be why....

Glad you worked it out.
I'm still a firm believer that the best way to copy files to a PC is to use a card reader. Then, it's just a matter of drag and drop.

that sounds like a better idea, how does it work?
and would RAW image files work as well? if it's just data, anything should transfer, correct?
thx

Yeah. If you use a card reader, the CF card should show up as another drive. Then, just open the folder(s) with the images, select them and drag them into the destination folder on your PC. It really couldn't be easier, and typically it's a lot faster than copying from the camera.
BTW make sure your PC and card reader both support USB2. USB 1.1 is okay, but 2.0 really flies.

No...they all do pretty much the same thing. As I said earlier, just make sure it's USB 2.0 (as long as your PC supports it).

I use the PNY and find it very reliable. Since I got a new computer though I don't even have to go that route got the card readers built into the PC neat.
here's a link to the PNY site

Agreed, my new pc came with the multi format card reader - takes the old SD cards from m y Olympus and the CF card from my S1 IS - super fast and easy!
