Here is a suggestion: how about a Sunday afternoon-evening kind of thing for a photowalk?
Also, not to think to far in advance, but I had a nice time shooting the Chinese New Year Parade last February. We should do that again.
Hey Thomas, how you doing? How the stobist treating you?

Actually the most beneficial lens for me would be the 24-70L, but I don't know if I can throw down that money.
135L/85mm would be the second lens I need for what I do.
The rest is just for fun. Well I do need a new bag, my 6mdh is stuffed! And I would love a lighter and smaller monopod. :D That's just a want more than a need though. I'm fine with my current monopod.

Argh, so I just fried the circuit board of one of my hard drives. I was using one of those ide/sata to usb cables and I swapped the cables too soon. Luckily it wasn't my hard drive that contained all my photos. Now I'm considering purchasing a drobo as I don't trust that those $20 cables anymore.

Drobos seem nice but they are very expensive. I just use internal hard drives for storage, and mirror each one to an external usb drive.

They sure are, a new firewire one can be purchased for $350 shipped with live. That's not that bad though. I actually wasn't planning on purchasing one for a few years. The problem is I have an iMac at home so I can't just stick external hard drives into my computer. I have to use a sata/ide to usb cable in order to access the drives. That's one thing I miss about having a PC. I figure externals cost close enough to an internal.
I might just jump on the drobo. I'm not sure yet, I need to figure it out. If that drive had been my pictures I would of been pissed off. I basically dumped all my photos into one hard drive right now and I'm kind of scared to access it.

Hey sorry to hear about that Ricky. I use one of those Sata/IDE to USB cables too on occasion. What did you do exactly that fried your HD?
ooo
23rd of November 2008 (Sun), 10:22
Well I had it plugged into a SATA drive at first and I transferred up all my photos onto that SATA. Then I quickly plugged the power connector to the IDE drive. I didn't unplug it from the wall outlet first, so I guess the power didn't regulate and it fried the circuit board on my IDE drive. I ordered an identical hard drive from ebay and I'm going to swap the boards. I heard that should do the trick.
Now I don't trust those cables anymore.

I got it for the added power and to set up dual monitors.
The Air sounds cool. I use an old G4 PowerBook to check my e-mail and browse the web around the house over wifi, but it's practically running on steam. I had my eye on the new MacBook Pro, but Apple is adding some very restrictive DRM to its new notebooks which is a tremendous turn-off.

I have a Mac Pro also and have always toed the line of expandability.
But tell me, how many people actually ever crack open a tower and "expand" it in any way. I don't think I ever have. I've been meaning to increase the ram, add another hard drive, but as it stands, it kind of sits relatively unused.
I have two MacBook Pros, one for my day job, and the other for play. I prefer sitting and intertubing with it, rather than sitting in another room and using the Mac Pro. When I do have a large number of photos, however, the Mac Pro is much, much faster in every way than the MacBook Pro.

Most people who bought traditional expandable PCs probably never cracked the case, but since one of the major selling points of a Mac Pro is expandability I might guess that the percentage who do so is a little higher. I just added another terabyte HDD, and will be installing more memory before the year is out.
I like sitting at the desktop mainly because I've got two monitors hooked up. Not sure I'd ever go back to a single display. I also work from a home office, so the desktop is the "work machine" and my laptop is for bumming around the Internet after hours.

My family used PCs for years. Throughout my time away at college and afterwards, I would get weekly or bi-weekly calls from my father asking the typical questions... "how do I do this?", "what does this message mean", "i forgot how to do XYZ". Every weekend or holiday that I returned home, I'd spend hours clearing out a machine that was quite literally slowed to a crawl with spyware, malware, adware, corrupt files and endless error messages.
It came time for them to get a new computer a few months back and I convinced my father to get an iMac. He got accustomed to the new interface in record time, and uses it daily. I haven't gotten a single phone call. I made one "service visit" to install some software so that he could use the old scanner from his PC. At the moment he's busy ripping his CD collection to iTunes, downloading and editing pictures from his new digital camera, and scanning old family photos. This is monumental.
If this isn't evidence of a better product all-around, I don't know what is.
Me? I do like the UNIX factor. I spend a lot of time in the terminal. My UNIX-fu is decent, and I'd choose to write SQL than click around in something like Access any day of the week. On that specific example I know you can actually write SQL in Access, but I find both its JET implementation and programming interface torturous.

If my 72 year old mother can use a PC to browse and email then anyone can.
Seriously though, for folks like us, I really don't see it making a big difference.
I used to do Digital Audio work years before and actually the Mac was the preferred platform. It probably still is, but I think that's just carry-over from the old days. Except for a few titles, here and there, there's nothing you can't do on a PC that a Mac could do.
The way I see it, in the business community, Wintel boxes dominate. I don't think Mac shows up on the radar. Owning a mac is nice and everything, but if I could only own 1 computer, it will always be a PC...as long as it dominates the field I make money in, Financial Programming...

Yeah, PC, Mac, doesn't really matter. It's a matter of taste.
You can do anything I can do. I can do anything you can do!
Folks complain about Wintel machines all the time, but part of it is due to animosity towards Microsoft. Macs to look very refined. The casing is slick, nice style. Something that doesn't matter when the computer is under the desk.
I like being able to swap out my Core2Duo CPU to a QuadCore and not have to worry about proprietary stuff...though Mac's aren't as proprietary as they once were. I swap out stuff all the time, constantly upgrading my components without much worry. It's not for everyone I suppose. Have to swap out my Motherboard, CPU and get some new memory? No problem. In fact I did that when I upgraded my old Quad to a newer one. XP keeps on chugging away.
I've had this Windows XP Pro build for a 2 years now and I leave my PC on months at a time. I usually turn it off only when I go on vacations. Never a problem with viruses, spyware, adware...nothing.
Can't go wrong either way methinks!:D
I was a PC, my husband talked me into my first Mac a year ago, and I'll never turn back. A year into a PC you always have problems, I've had NONE, and I've not seen it slow down with the tons of stuff I have on it.
I won't go back, I'll be buying the macbook Pro shortly.
I can't go spec to spec for you and I wont' "crack the case" but for experience to experience. I've had Dell, Gateway and HP....
You can be a PC
I'll be a Mac! :-)

Hey thanks for the heads up. I will be careful with my cables from now on. I didn't think that they could have a devastating effect under certain circumstances.
On a lighter note, hey Nick, didn't you say you were 6'5" before? By the way can you read Japanese, there's a website that I need translated.

Running very smoothly, no virii, adware or other junk since it was put together on my dining room table. Lol Nick, you crack me up. Actually I wanted to read the label at the back of this Nissin's Ramen Instant noodle pack that I'm having for lunch. Seriously though, I am hunting down a spare bolt for one of my bike's brake lever - it broke off during a spill. It's amazing how I can't get that one tiny bolt here in the US, and the only sites where I see it available are in Japanese.
I think I will never hear the end of my first 2 hours with my Brompton. That was ages ago! :o Anyway I have been enjoying it thoroughly (and I have become an expert in folding it, thank you very much ;)) so much so that I hardly ever ride my other bikes anymore. I regularly commute on it close to 20 miles a day, round trip, going over the Williamsburg Bridge and back. Check out my modifications to the bike here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=487234).
Any guys out here like to ride? Let's do a ride and shoot gig sometime, we cover much more ground that way. Hey there's a new Vietnamese Sandwich shop that opened on Mulberry, between Canal and Bayard. I just had one, it is delicious.
PC here too by the way. I built my own, with a Q6600, X48 board, 4870 GPU, 8 GB Ram, mild OC to 3.0 Ghz. Runs great.

I have a bike. Whether I am able to ride it more than a mile or two, well that's a different story.
Correct me if my physics is wrong (which is probable because I never took physics!) but isn't a bike with smaller tires such as the folding bikes I see lately more difficult to pedal?

Thomas, the trick is picking a gear that you can push the whole day and you're good. Forget about speed, at least initially ;)
Bike speed depends on a lot of factors and wheel diameter is rarely one of them. Some of the HPV world record contenders' bikes have small wheels. On pavement, I find that my road bike is faster than my Brompton. My foldie though is easier on pavement than my mountain bike with its fat tires - I can easily out sprint a mountain biker on pavement. Of course the tables are turned when on single track, where the mountain bike rules and the road bike wallows like a beached whale (albeit skinny). But getting onto a crowded subway, my folder is tops for obvious reasons.
Advanced Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I will be leaving tomorrow for Maryland to be with family. Have fun at the parade!

Cruel joke you played on me...cruel joke. Did you really check your jock strap thoroughly in that gym bag of yours? I mean, I know there's not too much space to dig around in there, but maybe the actual cap is still nestled in there with all that moisture and what must be fungus growing in there.
That's OK. I am using my 1.4x TC as the lens cap for the 2x TC.

Hey Nick, I can ride to Maryland, but the plan was to arrive there before Thanksgiving, not by Christmas. I arrived there Wednesday night, just in time to prep and brine the bird for roasting next day. Next morning I took a walk around the neighborhood and filched some rosemary sprigs from my cousin's neighbor's yard - along with a pound of butter I inserted these beneath the turkey breasts' skin. Yummy. Actually my cousin's neighbor allows us to take rosemary sprigs anytime as she doesn't really use them except to ward off deer from her yard. It seems that deer hate the smell and veer away, no wonder I don't have deer sniffing around in my NYC pad as I keep a bottle of dried rosemary around.
Hey I'm adding to the pile too! ;)
