Alright, so I found the old system of just posting messages on POTN when organzing NYC meetups kind of inefficient so I created a group on Facebook here:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=55037975213

Basically when we create a meetup people don't need to scroll back 5-10 pages just to see the details. This will eliminate the chances of a lot of us answering repetitive questions. Also it will act as a reminder if you RSVPed for the meetup. For all the NYC POTN members (who are Facebook users) please go ahead and join the group.

We can obviously still discuss ideas here but I just wanted to make sure we had a centralized location for meetup details.

big_apple_ken

So the ideas were are currently brainstorming:

1) Shooting at Manhattanhenge either Friday at sunrise/sunset
2) POTN meetup either 3rd (7/20) or 4th (7/27) Sunday of July

Also I was thinking if you guys were cool maybe we can just meet over beers one of these nights.

I don't really care for FaceBook or MySpace, but it doesn't seem like a bad idea to manage shoots/get togethers....

yeah .. its best to usually start a new thread for a new meetup .. so everyone doesn't have to scroll through 20+ pages to see whats going on for those that doesn't have facebook ..

this just came into me .. there's a great photo opt at LIC over looking manhattan at night .. i think this can be pretty cool .. and this can serve a purpose for those that has never shot long exposures

and there's a bar/restaurant there to chillax

What marathon specifically? Once I get my tripod I'm totally down to get some long exposure shots. I've been trying to push the 'buy' button based on POTN recommendations but I just wanted to make sure I knew all ins-and-outs before I buy it. Flash bracket is coming the mail today...excited...

tsw910
11th of July 2008 (Fri), 12:19
honestly Ken .. you should just stop by B&H and see the tripods for yourself and the guys working there are pretty helpful if you get the right guy .. and you cant go wrong with a Bog and Man combo

big_apple_ken
11th of July 2008 (Fri), 12:43
I was at B&H yesterday but was in a bit of a rush. I know the Bog and Man combo is good but I just wanted to get this right the first time instead of buying another tripod down the road. The other guys on POTN suggest a Gitzo 2 series and Markins Q3 or M10 ball head. A tad expensive but I'm willing to pay more money if it's a quality product.

I regret not having gone to a store to check out tripods, ordered it online from suggestions. I love it, but would have preferred a lighter, smaller unit. I got the Bogen-Manfrotto 3021BPRO with the 484RC2 Mini Ball Head with RC2 Rapid Connect Plate.

I also have the 3021BPRO. That thing is a BEAST compared to the new 190cxpro3 (carbon fiber) that I got. Had I known, I would have bought 2 of the carbon fiber tripods from the get go.

Yeah, let's put something together. If people can't meetup to shoot at least let's get together for a beer/coffee since people don't drink. So how about Sunday? I'm thinking 7/20 or 7/27 (weather pending). Here's the basic plan:

If we shoot

So the plan last time was the meet up at Washington Square park around 11AM and walk uptown while taking street shots. If there's a event going on during this time period maybe we can shoot that instead but for now lets stick to the street shot plan unless someone has a better suggestion.

If we meet up for drinks

The only thing that I ask is that if the weather is nice we go somewhere with a backyard or rooftop so some of us can enjoy our beers under the sun while others can enjoy their sodas/water/coffee.

So lets do a quick tally:

1) What day can you make it? 7/20? 7/27? Both?
2) Shoot or meet up for drinks? Maybe both? :D

Once we get an idea what people want I'll post it up on Facebook and here on POTN (for those of us who don't have Facebook).

I am going to bring my gear to work on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll get some shots. I was joking about the 3 hour lunch...maybe I can squeeze 1.5 hours for lunch, especially since the powers-that-be are here.:(

I guess if I can't get the shots of the players/legends, then I can always take some shots of the crowd and surroundings.

I was at the NY Giants parade earlier this year and it was chaos!

Now I have to ponder the age old question of "Which lens am I going to bring?".

Frack...

100-400L or 70-200 f2.8 IS + 1.4x TC?

Decisions, decisions, decisions...:(

***I reviewed my shots at the NY Giants parade, and it looks like the 70-200 would suffice. I assume it would be something similar. I had the f4 IS back then, this time I'll be armed with the f2.8 IS and 1.4x TC just in case.

Where are you going? I feel it might be easier keeping 1 centralized NYC thread although I am not against setting up event specific threads. The only downside to that is people might not know which thread to post in and it just adds to the confusion.

I ended up going as planned.

I stationed myself in the front row by the Hilton between 53rd and 54th. Had unobstructed shots of everything (unlike the NY Giants parade!). It was great seeing the legends of the game and the current stars. Otherwise it was pretty routine...car with player(s), next car with player(s). The atmosphere was OK...it wasn't as electric as the NY Giants parade.

With the high noon sun glaring off the windshields, some on and off cloud coverage, and my legs crapping out on me, I am pooped!

Will put up some pics if anything special surfaces. :-)

Anyways, another upcoming event would be the US Open Tennis practice day. It's free with nice photo ops of players up close and personal.

I'm probably going to go to that one as well...

Definitely post up some pics from the parade man. Which practice day are you going to nicksan (8/19-8/24)? Have you know what we can't and cannot bring? It looks like the SLR should be fine but how about a tripod/monopod? It says you can't bring bags so I guess we'll just wear the camera around our necks? Also what lens are you bringing to shoot the action? 70-200L? I am willing to take a day off work if you want to avoid the crowds and go on a weekday. Let me know.

I'll post up some pics later tonite. Nothing interesting...as I mentioned earlier it was just one truck after another. I also had to leave right after (ended up taking a 3 hour lunch...LOL) so I wasn't able to get pics of the aftermath...but there really wasn't too much of an aftermath so.

August 24th is practice day. I think the earlier days are qualifying matches, which are free as well.

I think for being able to freely take pics, the practice day on the 24th is the best bet. It's a very informal setting. You can walk around, check out the players practicing against one another, etc. Plenty of action shooting opportunities.

I'll be driving there so I think I might take my Domke shoulder bag with me that's pretty small. I would be able to fit a body, a tele, and a shorter lens. If they give me a hard time, I can just walk back to my car and leave the bag there...

I will probably take my 70-200 + 1.4x TC. As for the other lens, I am not sure since I probably will only be able to bring one additional lens tops.

Provided we get decent weather, shouldn't be a problem with the action...

Actually, no, not with a DSLR.
I went there a few years ago just to check it out, but it was post 9-11 so I can't imagine the security getting any tighter since we are even a few more years removed from that.

As for tripods, I would imagine no. I don't know about monopods though. I won't bring anything other than my camera and a lens or two.

The only concern would be the white lens I suppose. But it doesn't say anything about DSLR photography and I know they allow point and shoots in there so...

Part of me says better to have the stuff in a small bag so it's not obvious with the white lens and everything. Then again, maybe if they see the camera hanging on my shoulder, they won't be suspicious and let me in.

Who knows...and I am sure it's really up to who's working the gates that day.

Here's the security policy page they have up.
http://www.usopen.org/visiting_the_open/fullstory.sps?iType=12169&iNewsid=288688

Pretty liberal on the size of the bag, however it says single compartment. My Domke bags have "pockets" on the outside. Are they considered compartments? If not, then yeah, single compartment, separated by dividers! I hate these friggin' policies!!!

1DMKIII + 70-200 f2.8 IS. I was in the front row by the barricades so at the closest I was < 10-15 ft away. The lens was waaaaay more than enough to handle this.
Man and i have been contemplating on getting the 70-200 f4 or a better all around lens than my kit lens (like the tamron 28-75)...but u just pushed me waaaaaaaaaaaay towards getting the telephoto!!

Alright, so a few things on the calendar:

1) POTN-NYC meetup - Sunday 7/27. Basic plan is to meet up 11AM at Washington Square Park and walkup uptown while taking street shots.

2) US Open (tennis) practice day - Sunday 8/24. Nicksan said we should be free to shoot and players are pretty mellow & relaxed.

I'll post these both up on Facebook so we keep the details centralized. The group is at:

Obviously this is all pending weather.

There is a smaller (35 vs 125 balloons) Balloon festival 8/8-8/10 at Brookhaven Calabro Airport. Here's the link:

http://www.metronyballoonfest.com/

The cool thing is you can get there via public transportation:

http://mta.info/lirr/getaways/LongIsland/BalloonMusicFest.htm

Here's some additional info:

General Admission: $20 (Adults), $12 (Ages 5-11), free for Children 4 & Under. Reserved Concert Seating: $50-$65 *(Reserved concert seating includes general admission.) Park Fee: $10.00

Balloon Rides: Fly-Away and Tethered Balloon Rides will be available at the festival. Reserved Hot Air Balloon rides - $215.00 per person (includes general admission ticket.) Tethered Balloon rides - $15.00 per person. Tickets will be available for “day-of” purchase.

I'm thinking even the tethered balloon rides could yield some very cool fisheye shots. Anyone else want to check this out?

Seriously though, if someone has a car I am totally game to go to this balloon festival on Sunday. Definitely you can shoot something different there. Obviously would be more than happy to split the gas fee. It's about 40 miles from NYC so I gather we should be able to get out there in like 40 mins time. Anyone interested to do this instead?

Well I think the meetup in the city should be a go even though response seems lukewarm. Right now it's you, tchan and me. Personally I'd really like to check this balloonfest out but I've exhausted all reasonable ideas outside of renting a car (which I'd prefer not to do). They will have fireworks tonight at the balloonfest as well. Basically if we ever end up going we either go super early (6AM) or before 6PM since they only send the balloons up twice per day. It's such a shame no one has a car. I'd definitely want to check out the balloonfest in 8/7-8/9 since you can get there via public transportation but that is not as big (in terms of scale) relative to this one.... :(

Here's the skinny on the Central Park balloon. Reservation no longer works. It is fully booked for the month (reservation times are only in the mornings). I waited 2 hours today to get on the balloon (most people had to wait 3-4 hours) and it was amazing up there. Cost is $25 and you get 10 minutes. I've never done night photography before and it was super hard without a tripod. Here's a photo I took with my 15mm fisheye:

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3074/2703142970_1797986fb2.jpg?v=0

Exif: aperture f/2.8, SS 1/6 & ISO 3200.

I'm really glad I did this test run tonight since I hope next time we go that I'll be better equipped technique-wise to shoot night photography. It was really hard juggling between exposure the photos correctly and dealing with the slow shutter speed.

It does, besides general technique issues I'm curious whether the fisheye was the wrong lens choice. I was thinking that it made more sense using a wide angle to capture the balloon and the skyline but maybe next time it might come out better using a telephoto. Any suggestions/tips? This is my first time shooting night photography so I'm hoping next time we go I'll get a better shot at it.

So I'm thinking lets bump back the time on the meetup tomorrow. Meaning instead of meeting at 11AM lets meet 1PM. I have tchan's contact info so Izzy please email me your contacts (email/tel #) at big_apple_ken@yahoo.com. so I can reach you tomorrow if we don't see you. If you can't find the Starbucks at 79 Washington Square (please check online) then give me a ring. So tomorrow's details:

Date: Sunday 7/27
Time: 1PM
Location: Starbucks (79 Washington Square)

Weather looks a little iffy right now (40% rain) so lets keep a lookout and be in contact tomorrow.

Plan is to work our way uptown taking street shots then take a balloon ride at Central Park. After my test shoot yesterday we absolutely should shoot daytime/golden hour shots from the balloon. Assuming at least a 3 hour wait I'm thinking we should get to Central Park latest by 3:30PM. Hopefully weather will be decent. See you all tomorrow!

That's actually a pretty good idea. I think some night shots of Manhattan might actually be kind of fun. So a few things on the calendar:

1) Tentatively the meetup is postponed until next Sunday (8/3). I'm open to suggestions but we can:

- Take street shots
- Do the balloon ride in Central Park (expect at least 2 hour wait)
- Meet up late and do night shots of Manhattan

Obviously this is pending weather again. Suggestions? Who's in?

2) Metro NY Balloon Festival (8/8-8/10)- we can take the LIRR there. $35 for LIRR ticket & admission ticket.

I'm also interested in joining a meet-up in NYC or vicinity. I live in northern NJ, not to far, and can come in for a day of shooting on a weekend.

I was considering signing-up with Bryan Peterson, who is offering a mentor class in Sept., but not sure I want to spend on that, since I live so close.\

I'm new to the forum, and a bit of a newbie photographer. I just moved up to a D5 from a point and shoot. (bought it at B&H). Wanted to this years ago, but finally took the plunge. I'm loving the camera and learning a lot on my own, but need more hands-on and more help from moreexperienced photographers.

I'm not sure how these meet-ups work, and where to start to join. Perhaps you can tell me more!

Much appreciated,

I want to go but right now it's more of a maybe since my good friend is in town from overseas. I'll know later this week.

So Sunday instead of going to the dragon boat festival (some of my friends were in it) I ended up meeting with a bunch of people off a NY strobist group meetup off Flickr in the morning. Total newbie to this but it was actually quite fun. I spent the majority of my day helping out by finding willing models and acting as human tripods (since some places didn't allow tripods). Took a handful of photos but wasn't particularly happy with them. Pretty sure I will meet up with this group again next time they do another meetup since it was really fun.

Maybe it's a crazy idea but I thought it might be kind of fun starting a thread/catalog/Flickr group of fun locations to shoot here in NYC (with picture and address of location). If you want you can write a line of how you plan to approach it. I was thinking more along the lines of having someone model near it but it doesn't have to be that way.

I was talking to some other photographer friends and maybe it's just me but I like to jot down locations in my Iphone when I see something interesting. Photos don't have to be high quality (camera phone will suffice) but just to give a general idea of what it looks like. Sounds like something you guys might be interested in?

aram535
6th of August 2008 (Wed), 08:39
I much prefer that we stay away from flickr. Otherwise I'm very interested, I think we should include Long Island and Brooklyn in the site as well. Even (MAYBE) NJ shore too since that's some of the best spots to get shots of the NYC skyline. :-)

ooo
6th of August 2008 (Wed), 20:49
Well there's already the flickr NYC social group for special events and the NYC group for general stuff. I think it would be better to keep an organized thread, as flickr groups becomes bloated with images and its hard to search.

So any pictures from that strobist event Ken?

big_apple_ken
7th of August 2008 (Thu), 09:39
I only took a handful of photos (spent the majority of the my time recruiting models on the street and being the human tripod) and honestly wasn't particularly happy with them. There's another thing going on this Sunday although I'm not sure if I can make it.

As for the Flickr group thing I just think it would be helpful for anyone here in NYC to have catalog of interesting stuff to shoot or places that could act as good backgrounds etc. Obviously the discovery process is rewarding in itself but the convenience of a catalog I think a lot of people would appreciate.

That was part of my job Saturday. I had to recruit people off the streets. Never done that before so it was a little weird at first but I think since I was rather friendly people eventually said ok. Personally I didn't get that many shots since I was borrowing their ebay triggers (I don't have any) and basically shot when they were taking a break. Didn't want to give a bad first impression by hogging up their gear and come off as a douche.

Yeah, my life has been super busy as well but I'm just trying to cram as much as I can in. Definitely want to sleep in on the weekends but with the opportunity to learn about lighting and practice shooting people I can live with dragging myself out of bed Sunday early morning :D.

I prefer to keep things in here as well.
Don't have a Flickr presence and don't intend to have one.

As for upcoming "events", more in the Sports category...at least the ones I have planned are.

-NY Jets Training Camp at Hofstra. Might go either this Sat. or Sun.
-US Open Tennis Practice Day as mentioned before.

I was glad they've got Brett Favre...but I was like damn, now it's going to be packed at practice!
I might hit up the 8:45am practice session on Sunday. It's a 2-a-day that day, so maybe it won't be packed early in the morning.

Another option is to drive up to SUNY Albany and check out the NFL Champs NY Giants in Training Camp.

Hey, it's all free and it's a nice way to meet up with some of the star players!

I always wanted to go either practice, never knew if it was free or not, or how early you were allowed to go. Is it bleachers only?

It's free format really. You find where the players are playing, either in one of the smaller stadiums or on the grounds, you either find a seat in the bleachers or by the fence, and check the action out.

Sometimes you see players strolling around the grounds after practice signing autographs, etc. Nadal was doing this...in typical Nadal fashion with his shirt off, girls screaming, etc.

I think a 70-200L would be fine, but keep in mind some of the players like to play on courts that are kind of nestled far away from the crowd so in that case something longer might do.

If I go, I'll probably bring my 70-200 f2.8 IS, 1.4x TC, and one more lens for close quarter shooting. It's not like you can bring a lot since they will be checking your bags and it's probably better to keep it simple.

Don't have the extender but I'll pick one up. What kind of lens would you use for close quarter shooting? Like a 24-70?

Looking at your gear list, I think the 24-70 is your best bet on the 5D.
It's either that or the 35L.

Pretty much the same here. I probably would be using the tele 90% of the time. So for the other 10%, I will probably use my 24-105L, which is my walkaround lens. I'd love to be able to bring my primes, but I'm not going to risk not being able to get in.

I might actually go with the 100-400L instead of the 70-200L, especially if the weather is decent.

Well, what kind of bag can I put the 24-70L in? That is usually my go-to lens but it's not the smallest of lenses.

I'll definitely leave my Slingshot 200 home. I'll probably bring my Domke F-3 shoulder bag. It's small, and can fit my 1DMKIII + 70-200 (or 100-400) + 24-105 both unmounted.

They have rules about "single compartment". I'm not sure what that means. My Domke bag does have side "pockets" and wonder if they would be considered separate compartments.

A set of non-edited (not even AWB) images from the Balloon show, they shut it down very early because of wind.

I have over 650 shots ( I tried to reduce the highspeed series to 1 or 2 shots only for the upload) so it will take me a while to go through them on my off time. Probably 200 of just when they were firing up their engines with the flames that was pretty cool but I over did it.

Looks like there will some sort of parade via the Newmindspace people (they did the bubble battle) on Saturday @ 7PM. Location is TBD until tomorrow. There is also a silent rave party at Union Square on Sunday. I am pretty busy Saturday but if I can make it I'd like to try to shoot at both events.

Here's what I got via email:

"This weekend is shaping up to be an epic one with two events that we are helping out with: The first is a renegade parade in the spirit of First Warm Night and One Night of Fire on Saturday night, and the second is a massive silent dance party in Union Square on Sunday. We hope to see you out at both, as we put the finishing touches on the Summer and prepare for Burning Man!

Welcome to the nyc potn social group!

Ken, what gear did you buy for the strobist group, just curious. And why do you need a off camera trigger? You were using a tripod? Isn't there enough light to just go handheld?
