OK, I have asked this again, but still no one seems to know.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about the above lens and bokeh in general, good points made some good descriptions of what bokeh is etc, but still an outstanding question:

Do you get the hexagon patterns in out of focus areas on a EF50 1.8 when it is at f/1.8?

I have one on my desk this morning after the holidays, arrived from B&H while I was away, no camera to test it on though, left it at home!

When I look down the lens I cannot see the apature blades, as it is fully open, suggesting to me that there shouldn't be any bad bokeh at f/1.8, which is why I bought this lens, to shoot at f/1.8 for narrow depths of field.

If I get the chance I will try this at home, will see how I go, but if any one knows :)

I do not know if you have been to Photosig, but there are some pics there...Browsable by lens type.

I don't have this lens, but when I am in the market for one, I look here to see what I may be able to achieve. Good luck in your quest..

Yes hexagon, try taping some paper to the front of the lens with a circle cut out, or a star or if you want to get really creative, you can make banana bokeh..........

Even a f/1.8? I am looking down the lens at the moment (full open), and I can't see any hexagons?

I will try this when I get home, then all will be revealed, not sure about fruit shaped bokeh though :D

I don't think with 5 blades the lens would produce a hexagonal bokeh... be it wide open or not. ;)

But wide open I sometimes got doubling in bokeh. Or it could've been my sunconscious.

Your best bet is to look at pbase gallery which has a TON of pics from it. Decide is that's the bokeh you want after looking at them for a couple of hours.

YOU have to make the decision. Not somebody else.

Cheers

Opps, it seems my brain has been on holiday too long!

Yep you got it, bot going to let some out of focus geometry spoil the enjoyment of a new lens!

And here we go, new lens, so it is straight out to the pond (lots of reflections of the sun, and yes it is actually out!) to take out of focus images

Here is a section of the image shot at f/1.8, deliberately out of focus:

Round and pleanty of them, not a pentagon in sight

not exactly smooth circles either..... but either way, I don't see this as such a horrible defect that some make it look like.

I've gotten 5 sized shapes (pentagon?) at times, mainly with bright lights.
