Can I use a Nikon Flash with my 40D???

I have a 40D ...and am wondering if the Nikon Speedlight SB-800 is compatible and if so...where do I go to find what settings to use???

I've just gotten my 40D with the ef 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens... and am new to external flash...any links to some tutorials or tips and tricks would be SO helpful.

I am photographing low light fast action, such as sports...indoor lit rodeo arenas...and at the same time getting portraits of crowd and "smile at the camera" shots for a small town newspaper. I have the previously mentioned lens as well as an EF 75-300 1:4-5.6 III USM and an EFS 18-55mm

any help would be appreciated...

In order to use the SB-800 with a 40D you will need to use the SB-800 in manual mode and use a set of triggers, like Pocket Wizards, Skyports, or Cactus triggers.

In order to use the SB-800 with a 40D you will need to use the SB-800 in manual mode and use a set of triggers, like Pocket Wizards, Skyports, or Cactus triggers.
Although no ETTL (or iTTL), the SB-800 also has a very utilitarian "tradition automatic" mode that will also work nicely in many circumstances with the 40D.

Like Lon said, you'll need to put it on Auto mode if you want to shoot with it on-camera. Most of its features are incompatible with your 40D, and I'd strongly recommend selling it and getting a 580EX II, if you want an expensive on-camera strobe. That SB-800 isn't going to be doing you any more good on your 40D than a $100 SB-26 would...
