View Full Version : Question about G7 onboard flash

OK, so in Auto mode (which I rarely use), when it senses the flash is needed, it sets the Shutter Speed to 1/60. This is what I would expect: Flash on = 1/60.

In Program mode, with the flash set to On or Auto, it does not set the shutter speed to 1/60 - instead it uses whatever shutter speed it thinks it needs without the flash, and shoots the flash on top of that.

So in low light, in P, I might compose a shot and it says 0"6 F2.8 - I take the shot, it exposes it for the six tenths, and also fires the flash. This of course does no good (unless it's on a tripod, in which case I'd try it without the flash to begin with...).

I want it to know that when the flash is used, the shutter speed should default to 1/60. Without going into Tv and manually setting it to 1/60, (in which case the aperture will try to compensate), or M, in which case the same applies - the light meter isn't factoring in the flash - I would have thought that in P, the flash default would be the standard flash default - 1/60.

Am I missing something here?

It seems like the only mode it'll actually expect the flash and factor in its effect, is Full Auto.

With the G9, this kind of adjustment is a menu setting; the G7 is probably similar. Change the Slow Synchro and probably the Safety FE settings.

Yessir! Turning Slow Synchro OFF did the trick.

I need to do some reading up on that, as well as the 1st Curtain/2nd Curtain thing, and the Safety FE - I'm getting to know the camera pretty well, and I don't have a clue on those...

Thanks for the help Gordon!
