Ok i have done the whole reverse the 50mm before, but I didn't like shooting wide open all the time so when i saw this on fm I had to try it with my broken AF elan kit lens

This is not a pic of mine, but an example from FM

Looking over your lens collection, you may want to have nothing to do with this post ;-)

Reversed 50's are fun to play around with.! Here is what my monitor looks like up close and personal with a 70-300 attached to the camera and a 50 reversed on the end of the 70-300.

Maybe I'm just easily amused... hahaha Hell, this looks like a fun way to spend a rainy winter afternoon, dinking around with this contraption just so you can say "look at this!".

Might be rather primative, but I think it's quite clever, and looks like fun!

Thanks for posting the link... it's in my "Interesting stuff to do" file!

WOlf,
How do you attach the 50 to the front of the 70-300? I already have a 50mm macro and a 70-300, and I'd like ot give that a try just for kicks.

Standard mount, the rear of the lens is unchanged.

You mount the two lenses together via their filter threads, you can get adaptors off B&H, or if you are lucky your local camera shop. As a 'just to see of it works, I used a some cardboard and tape!

Find yourself a 52-58 reversing ring. The ring needs male threads on both sides to mount the two lenses together.

I had trouble finding one with those specs so I made one by epoxying a 52-58 step up ring to a 58-55 step down ring.

I've got a 77mm reversing ring on the way - wooohoooo :)

17-40 reversed on the end of a 100-400

Serious magnification and no butchering required ;)

However respect to OP who has got this rig working :)

Wow rich, that should look nice and ugly.

You'll have to post pictures of that setup...

Do you just remove the front element all together or reverse it? With the reversed 50, do you simply use an adapter and mount it backwards onto another properly mounted lense? Sorry if these q's seem stupid, I'm a noob :) . Thx.

Hey what a neat disscovery!
There are actually lots of ways to get very high quality macro, some even cheaper than this but it's really cool to have the automatic aperture that this version keeps.

Great choice of lens to do it to! I had that version lens for six years and didn't get ONE single sharp photo. The five or more examples of later versions i've used are little better. It's funny that it's worth much more in pieces than together !

One thing i'm wondering-does it not work at all at longer focal lengths? Does that mean the magnification is not variable at all?

When a zoom lens is reversed for macro it works at all focal lengths giving variable focus distance/magnification.Of course then it has no auto aperture abilities

Will do

And first (held in place by hand) impressions are it is as ugly as it sounds

But the magnification is unreal, I lined it up on my .24dp monitor and I got about 8 'dots' in the frame (I know, there is a tech term, I forgot it :) )

I have one 'o these (except mine's a 50mm lens). They're a lot of fun. You can get in real close with them. I couldn't find the proper adaptor ring for my camera and lens combo so I epoxied the flange ends of two Cokin filter adapters together to make a male to male filter adapter of the appropriate diameters. Here's an image created with the gadget:
