i shoot a 10d, ill start there

for the most part, as of late, my photography as been heading towards more fashion orientated stuff, my 50mm f/1.8 lens works great and will be getting replaced w/ the 1.4 sometime soon... but in some situations i need to get a little bit wider. i have shot extensivly on a 17-35 L lens and feel that its just a tad too wide, especially when using a flash/fill flash/studio lighting. my intial thought was to buy a 70-200 IS lens... but the more im thinking about it, i do shoot a good amount on location, and in buildings, and sometimes need that full body vertical shot and can't back up enough w/ my 50mm.. so im thinking 24-70L - it would give me an effective working range of 38-112 and open up wide enough that @ 70mm i could blur the background clear out

so - lets here the pros and cons of the 24-70L plz

So you want a medium wide lens
It needs to be sharp
It needs to produce nice color/contrast
It needs to be fast for interesting DOF
And you'd like to spend around $1200

May i suggest this gem:

stunning lens (i am aware of it) and the speed of it would help, but for what ive been doing, primes are a bit of a crutch for me... as i can't always move in too close or back up enough, so having that amount of zoom for me is a big help

I bought my 24-70 L with high hopes of using it to shoot a school play - rehearsals, tech, performances, etc. I quickly found that 2.8 just wasn't fast enough for me in those situations, and I got some primes to use for that. So right off the bat I was a lttle disappointed.

My next revelation was how heavy it is - if you carry it around all day you will make some muscles sore.

Next up was the shadowing when using the built-in flash on the Drebel - the lens is so long and the diameter so big that it leaves a crescent on the bottom of the frame.

When the EF-S 17-85 IS was announced I tried to see if it could replace my 24-70 L. But as nice as it is, the 24-70 L beats it in certain situations, although the 17-85 has become my default walkarond lens.

On a 1D or 1Ds the 24-70 L may be the bee's knees, but the crop factor on a 20D or Drebel doesn't let it get wide enough - 38-112 equivalence is good but not great.

It might sound like I don't like it - not exactly true. It is a great lens, but it costs a big bundle and it requires compromises. So it stays in my inventory for now. If Canon ever brings out a 15-65 f2.8L, EF-S or otherwise, I would probably bail on the 24-70 L in a heartbeat - unless I have a 1D by then.

My 2 cents...

Have Fun,
