Hello guyes,
Just got my first Digi camera, eos 20d, it's great but in testing I see a problem.
The attached picture was shot at f4.5, 1/25 sec, iso 1600, WB tungsten, quality RAW + L jpeg.
As you should see, the problem is obvious. That blurish streak across the yellow wall.
I tried all WB options. Didn't solve it
however when I lowered the iso to 800, there was no problem, likewise, when I lowered the quality to fine without RAW, again, no streak. So it's only when I'm shooting at Top res and top iso, as yet theres no out-door testing.
I know how to avoid it but I don't understand why it's happening, is this a comon problem? What is the real cause?
Does it have anything to do with the 17-40mm L lens, originally designed for film cameras?
The camera is about a week old but could still be faulty!
Thanks in advance

My first thought is something on the sensor, perhaps it only shows up under high amplification (ISO3200). I doubt it is the lens, the only difference between film and digital is the dreaded 'X-Factor' (not relevant to this issue whatsoever).
Have you shot a plain surface at 3200, perhaps out of focus?

thing is, the pattern of the effect varies making me think it's not something static such as on the sensor, plus it's just out of the box and hasn't been outside, nevermind many lens changes. Should I be conservative with the "sensor cleaning" function on the camera or is it someting I should do before every shoot?

Check this thread out. You might be experiencing the same problem discussed here:

What version of firmware is on your 20D? If it is not 1.1, you should definitely update. The link is listed below, with instructions on the site. After you update, let us know if it fixes anything.

If you use the Canon EVU software to convert the Raw file, there is your problem.
This is an annoying bug with that software at ISO1600+
DPP will work better (although it has a few glitches of it's own, ie, purple halos on high contrast areas).

Is the blue in the jpg file, the CR2 file after you converted it or both ?

In my experience the embedded jpg is fine. It's only the converted Raw that is affected when you use Canon EVU. I dont know how Canon could let such a huge glitch get by.
DPP is the other, newer, and probably better Raw conversion software that comes with the 20D.
The v1.1 CD should be in the box. The v1.5 update is available from Canon's website.
DPP is quite good especially since it is free. I found a bug though were high contrast areas (mainly black) can sometimes have a purple fringe around it. This usually isn't noticable though.
