At the risk of sounding stupid, I should buy a digital lens for the Drebel, right? I am getting it at B&H and they offer both film and digital lens for the same price. Also, will the x-factor still apply with digtal lenses?

Thanks.

There are only two types of EOS lens, the EF and EF-S.

There are no digital lenses as such, however the EF-S (S for short back focus) only works on digital cameras (only the Drebel & 20D without modifications to the lens).

I believe the B&H references are the same lenses, just in both places, in case people look under digital lenses instead of the other lens section.

The Drebel comes with an EF-S18-55 as a kit option, you can't use this on a film EOS, but there is nothing stopping you from buying a EF28-135IS, EF50 or something they will work fine.

The 'X Factor' applies to all lenses on sub 35mm sized sensors (Drebel included).

If you have no full frame sensor digital camera, and if you have no full frame 35mm film camera, then you can purchase any EF or EF-S lens and it will work fine.

However, some of us have either a full frame digital, or a full frame 35mm film camera, and the EF-S will not fit, so we avoid EF-S from our purchases. If I am going to buy a lens, I want to be able to use it on any camera of this family.
