D30 backup battery life expectancy

I've had my D30 for a year now (;)) and I was wondering how long the backup battery can be expected to last. I know it puts up a warning message when the battery runs low. Anyone know how long the battery lasts and how quickly you need to replace it after the warning message appears? In other words, should I be carrying a spare around with me?

I rang the Canon support desk and put the question to them. I was told the battery should last about a year and it shouldn't be necessary to carry around a spare, there being adequate time to get a replacement after the battery low warning is given.
