View Full Version : APBA Hydroplane Gold Cup - Detroit River - Show me what you got.

My first time back here to the races in a long time... Saw lots of white barrel L glass so I'm sure some POTN'ers were there!! I rarely shoot motorsports so these are some shots of the hydroplanes races on the Detroit River from today. Unfortunately, I locked myself out of my car and was armed only with my 100-400 and 24-105... My wide angle and fisheye were on the backseat floor and my wife didn't show up until late in the afternoon so that might explain why some of the shots were a little close-in (including some practicing at panning- something I don't find myself doing much!) Still was alot of fun and any C&C would be welcome!

Thanks!

#4 is so amazing! i could look at it for hours. looks like some of your pans need work but ive never shot anything on water so maybe the waves going up and down are messing things up?

Thanks for the comment...

I was pretty happy the way my panning came out on #6, could've been a tad bit sharper but pretty happy with it... The 7 definitely could be a little better by keeping the farther boat more focused... But like I said, I don't pan very often so it was a good experience and a fun day!

As a APBA water rescue team owner and Fire fighter. My vote is for the picture of the Firefighters from Detroit.

If you look closely at the second shot, between the front of the yellow boat and the orange marker in the water, you can see the red Formula boat upside down right after it crashed. It was hard to see the crash because of all the spray from the other boats. The driver was rescued and taken to the hospital. He was OK and released from the hospital. I will post a shot of him being rescued.

Claybuster-

Great shots you got there! I had the PERFECT shot when the 2nd boat flipped (the offshore "Motley Crue" boat) but it all happened so fast and I happened to have set my camera for panning shots and the shot came out with unacceptable motion blur. :( Still, I got some nice shots for the limited racing that went down on Sunday... I used a circular polarizer to minimize the reflection off the water so everything is saturated as well with minimal glare... Here are a few:

Now that you mention it, and I don't know why, but i always take pictures of the rescue teams. I wish I could have been closer to get some better shots.I was on Belle Isle and the crash was on the Detroit shoreline pretty far away. This next shot is one of the rescue teams at the redbull air races. Sorry I went off topic of the boat races.

This thread is in trouble, :) i've got over 5000 images from 3 days. Lots of big white lenses and by the looks of things so far, a lot of us were at the same place at diff. times :D and at the same time. WE need more introductions or POTN gear. Anyway, I digress and here's my first two.

Everybody has some awesome shots. I see that the U-7 Formula Boat was the one that had the blow-over. Did anyone catch the Blow-over, frame by frame?

ABRA is the division in which, the Unlimited's are classified as being part of.
APBA is the division in which you the have Powerboats.

They are not the same. The operate together, but also operate as separate entities.

Awesome shot of Steve David driving Oh Boy Oberto/ Miss Madison. I tried finding some low angle places at Madison, to get a shot like this, but it's not very easy on the Ohio River.

Did anyone talk to the Nikon Shooter, using D3's and a 600/4. His name is Peirce Williams. He shoots for powerboat magazine, and shoots Nascar/IRL stuff. I caught a glimpse of him in the shot, with all the shooters in the corral. He was the only bald man, using a 600/4. :D

The middle gentleman in the coral with the green vest is Robert Peters a photographer with the DRRA and those other photographers were shooting with him. The photographer with the beard in the black works for one of the local newspapers (Det News or Free Press). The other photographer is always at the local events, but I do not know who he shoots for.

That is what i was told also, breaking the sound bearier in a populated area is a no,no. "according to a Navy person" in the photogs area.

The sonic boom you generate at the speed of sound would break windows and glass throughout the entire area (Including I image all the L glass that was there in the area shooting!! :o) ... Hence they don't reach that threshold...
