With my recent valuation of my photo kit for insurance purposes, it was pointed out to me that the above lens was no longer available, only a cheaper plastic f/4.5 version, he also said that the 28-135IS is also no longer available.

What is the story, these are good non L lenses, do we now jump from cheap plastic to L lenses now with no intermediate (the only exception I can see is that they still seem to do the 24-85, and there is the EFS17-85 now, but is is not as fast as the original 28-105)

I might just have to settle for a 24-70L if my 28-105 takes a walk!

Hmmm, perhaps only in this part of the world then, hopefully it it not a global trend!

Maybe Canon is going to gear up for an upgrade. I like the 28-105 f/3.5-4.5. It is a very good lens, especially when you consider the price.

picked it up.......last one though. They knew nothing about it being discontinued, but they did not have any more in their last shipment.

The one I picked up seems to have a slight grinding noise when zooming back out to 28 from longer focal lengths...has anyone noticed this in their 28-105?

We often hear false rumours that this lens or that lens is discontinued. This really sounds like another scare story.
To make this clear-was it an insurance agent/company that stated it was discontinued?

That does not sound normal to me, I have had two (first one stolen) and neither did that!

It was the camera shop doing the valuation, also it and the others I have mentioned are no longer on the local Oceania Canon site (Australia/New Zealand).

Ok
I have noticed that it's not in many sellers lists. My guess is that it's still very much in production but we don't get it here anymore.
The 75-300 is like that.We officialy get the 90-300 instead but the 75-300's are still available new off oz.ebay

Local camera shop says although it feels like grinding, its just the "newness" of the lens. Sounds like kind of a "I don't feel like replacing it right now" answer, but they said if it doesn't seem better after a little use to bring it back and they would replace it. So I guess we'll see.....

Can't say I have ever experienced that, might pay to find another to compare it with. I don't expect a new car to be rough because of its 'newness'. My money is on you paying them another visit in a little while!

Well, when mine was new, it had a very slight "roughness", but I wouldn't quite call it grinding. Hard to describe in words, but you could feel the roughness and even hear a soft, polycarbonate dragging sound.

It cleared up pretty quickly with use. There are surfaces that will rub themselves to the proper smoothness - in essence, you're use of the lens is the final lapping of the bearing surfaces.

This lens has been discontinued by Canon Australia too.

I ordered mine a couple of months ago from B&H without any dramas.

Yeah it was discontinued in Oz a little while ago.

Am thinking about selling mine ... maybe I should wait and see if they go up in value?

I would maybe say it sounds like the polycarbonate dragging......I used grinding for lack of a better word....I'll let everyone know how it turns out
