View Full Version : Don't hate me. How much should I charge?

A company who "deconstructs" textile mills has e-mailed me about a few pictures of a textile mill they were working on that I took. They're asking about two specific shots that they want to use on their new web site. In the past, I have negotiated myself right out of a sell and I don't want to do that again.

So two photos on their company's web site for a few years? Ballpark figure, how much should I charge?

I know these questions must be tedious for you long timers on these forums. I've been shooting stills for nearly ten years and would love to make more money at it. (I have some lens I want.) It's much easier working in TV news shooting video. You sign the contract and no you won't make any realy money at it.

Is there a web site where some of this is laid out in layman's terms?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Tell them you are interested in doing a deal, and ask them what their budget is and what kind of licensing terms they are looking for. Leave the ball in their court and see what they come up with. If they make n offer you are happy with, take it. If they imply they'll just give you photo credit - simply advise them in a professional manner that this is your business (even if you aren't a full-time pro) and that you do not give work away to anyone.

Just my 2p

PS why do think people will hate you? POTN is pretty friendly!

Welcome to the forum. I have nothing to add except that while the question you ask may not always illicit the friendliest response you will not be hated. The only reason people dislike the question is the fear that people give away work which makes it harder for others to earn a living.

Stick around it's a great place.

I supose hate was too strong a word. I have been lurking here, so I expected some ftridnly folks. Steve, thanks for your help. I believe I will do that. And after reading the photo credit thread, I think you are right in that regard. One thing going for me is that the shots I took can no longer be duplicated.
