Over the Rhine @ C2G - 7/11/08

Over the Rhine is such a great band...hard to describe them really as they have something like 17 albums and bridge several styles. I guess I would call them mid-western quasi-spiritual folk pop with a touch of jazz or something along those lines. I only got to see the first 4.5 songs or so as I was putting on a show at my house this same evening...but it was enough to leave an impression.

FYI, these shots were processed entirely in the Lightroom 2 beta (from import to output sharpening). One cool thing about the beta is the ability to take the clarity slider in the negative direction...instant skin softening! Thanks to Joel for making me finally dl the beta...I am a fan!

P.S. If you haven't noticed...the 30D + 135L is my favorite combo at this particular venue. (winky smiley)

I love my 135, wish I had more chances to use it, thanks for sharing. Love the light in these images. I think this is the first time I've seen the 30D do ISO 1250 so well.

Thanks for the comments. ISO 1250 seems to be a sweet spot for ISO speed and noise performance. I often try to shoot at 800 at this venue, but the shutter speeds get a little slow sometimes (I like to stop down a bit when I can so I have some margin for error).

Oh and just for the record 5 and 8 were with the 5D.

funny, i was just thinking that i've become completely comfortable w/ just shooting @ 1600, and then if i have enough light, to stop down.

Oh trust me, I'm a little too comfortable with high ISO. It's these venues with light that usually throw me. It's easy when I have no choice and have to shoot wide open at 3200...all the decisions are made for me. I'm just trying to get out of that knee jerk reaction to just stick it on 1600 and go. And yeah, shooting at f/2.8 or f/4 is kind of nice sometimes..yes, it's taken me 2 years to figure that out!
The thing about this venue is those projection screens really mess with me. Admittedly, this is probably the first time I've really nailed the exposures on a consistent basis at this venue, and as we all know, that is the real key to keeping the noise down.
