I am trying to do a better job -please help

I like the subject and lighting that you used. If I were to change anything on this it would be the background. I feel it would be better if the background was consistent rather than what appears to be half window and half curtain.

I agree the lighting is nice. More about the background: the curtain forms a vertical line that runs down the side of her face and then further down the ribbon or whatever that is. In essence, that vertical line chops the picture in two. Had you moved her, or yourself, just a bit you could have avoided this line. It's the kind of thing I always find in my pictures after I'm reviewing them at home....
