How do you you smugmug users organize your photos?

How do you you smugmug users organize your photos when you have tons. My family want lots of pics of events and im having a hard time figuring out how I should layout my current messy smugmus site.

Galleries, Categories, Sub-Categories..

Any layout and structur tips/ideas?

I go by Categories. Have a look (See siggy).

I make my own Categories of course.

Perhaps in your case you can have two three or even four main categories, and then branch a few sub-categories from the main ones: (spitballing here)

- Family Events
* Uncle Bob's B-day
* Baseball game at Robby's School

- Family trips
* Orlando 2006
* Colorado 2007

- My Photo Galleries
* Still Photos
* Sports

- My Family / Portraits
* [Wife's name]
* [Children's name]

And so on...

This will give you one page with four or five thumbnails to choose from, but each time you choose, you can narrow to a definite trip, a definite day of the trip, a specific photo of that day.

Anyhow, that's that.

I also like by category and then by gallery. It is much cleaner looking than just by gallery.

what do you do with old stuff. My events cat. is getting huge? Do I remove it and have mom 3k miles away yell at me a month later when she wants to go thru it again? or leave it on there and lets it get huge and hard to find things?

Well, you can create a Category named "Archived Galleries" and move every old gallery there.

Or you could disable or merge older galleries.

Personally, I'd rather put an Archive Cat. and move the old stuff there. That way it is only one thumbnail instead of anything else.
